How to Measure for a New Toilet
How to Measure for a Replacement Toilet
All toilets eventually need to be replaced. You will experience leaks in your toilet as it ages. Components will fail. More efficient models will become available.

Once you've grown tired of the hassles of your old toilet, and the time comes to replace it, getting the measurements right is essential. To be sure you are buying a toilet that will fit in your space, you will need to measure the room first. You will need to take more measurements if your bathroom is small.

Here's how to make sure your replacement toilet will fit exactly where the old one used to stand.

How to Measure for a Replacement Toilet

Tank Height
Check the new toilet's tank height to make sure it will fit underneath shelves or anything else currently above the old toilet. Toilet tanks are measured in height from the floor to the top of the tank. Take your measurement at the very top edge of the tank lid, using the tape measure.

Toilet Depth

The toilet bowl and the toilet seat are either round or oval. The oval bowl provides more comfort than the round bowl, which tends to take up less space. In order to measure your current toilet's depth, measure from the front edge to the back of the tank. When choosing a new toilet, choose one with a depth similar to your current toilet. In case you would like to have more space in front of the toilet, pick a shallower model.

Rough-in Measurement
A toilet's rough-in measurement refers to the distance between the wall behind it and the center of the waste pipe. In order to measure the rough-in for your toilet, measure from the wall behind the toilet to the middle of your bolt caps. The rear set of bolt caps should be measured if there are four.

Measure the space of your existing toilet and waste pipe configuration, then buy a new toilet that fits with your existing bathroom space and waste pipe configuration.
