How to Measure for a Replacement Toilet

Tank Height
Check the new toilet's tank height to make sure it will fit underneath shelves or anything else currently above the old toilet. Toilet tanks are measured in height from the floor to the top of the tank. Take your measurement at the very top edge of the tank lid, using the tape measure.

Toilet Depth

In order to measure your current toilet's depth, measure from the front edge to the back of the tank. When choosing a new toilet, choose one with a depth similar to your current toilet. Rough-in Measurement
A toilet's rough-in measurement refers to the distance between the wall behind it and the center of the waste pipe. In order to measure the rough-in for your toilet, measure from the wall behind the toilet to the middle of your bolt caps. The rear set of bolt caps should be measured if there are four.
