Water pipe insulation: how to do it
How to Insulate Outdoor Water Pipes
Water that freezes inside a pipe expands and can damage the pipe. A burst pipe can cause fast and furious water damage to your property. Anyone who has had a pipe burst in the frigid months knows why it's important to prevent frozen pipes this and every winter.

By protecting your hot water pipes from the elements, insulating them reduces the risk of disaster as well as reducing your energy costs.

Which Pipes Need Insulation?
It is common for homeowners to assume that they only need insulation on outside water lines. As a matter of fact, any pipe exposed in your home, especially those in unheated areas like exterior walls, garages, attics, basements, and floor cavities above unheated crawl spaces, will greatly benefit from insulation.

Insulation Methods and Materials
According to the type of pipes you are covering, here is a list of materials you might need:
Duct tape
Expanding spray foam
Foam caulk rope
Insulation or pipe wrap of your choice (outdoor faucet cover, pipe sleeve)

Foam Pipe Sleeves
The easiest way to insulate pipes is with foam pipe sleeves. For a long, straight pipe that needs to be covered, this is our preferred choice. Most sleeves come in increments of six feet, and their diameters can range depending on the pipe size.

Over a pipe, apply a foam pipe sleeve as follows:
Position the sleeve along the pipe.
The sleeve slit must be opened and the pipe must be covered.
Tape or use adhesive to seal the seam.
Make sure the sleeve fits the length of the pipe.

Pipe-wrap Insulation
Insulate small lengths of pipe with pipe-wrap, a simple and effective method for insulating the exterior of the pipe. There are many types of pipe insulation tape, including foam-and-foil pipe insulation tape, bubble-film pipe wrap, foil-backed natural cotton wrap, and rubber pipe insulation tape.

Installing pipe-wrap insulation tape:
Wrap one end of the pipe with the insulating wrap.
Wrap it around the pipe in spiraling loops, ensuring that the entire pipe is covered.
After you have wrapped enough insulation, cut the end off.

Outdoor Faucet Covers
If your roof and eaves are covered with ice, a hard foam faucet cover will protect the faucets from freezing temperatures and the ice falling from them. Almost every hardware store or online retailer sells faucet covers.

Heres how to install your faucet cover:
First, disconnect the hose from the faucet and store it in a safe place for the winter.
Place the rubber loop around the spigot.
Position the cover over the spigot.
Hold the cover in place by tightening the slide lock. Make sure there are no air gaps.

Additional Winter Pipe Protection Tips
You should keep an eye on your pipes during the winter regardless of the type of pipe insulation you choose. Stop the water flow to outdoor faucets and open the spigots to drain the pipes before the first hard freeze. You can run your spigots occasionally throughout the winter if you are unable to shut off the outdoor water supply. This ensures that the water pressure is normal.
