Programming: Why is this longtime favorite slipping down the rankings in programming languages?
A prominent web development language is losing popularity, yet it is still a highly popular computer language.

PHP, a popular programming language for online and backend development, was once one of the most popular languages, but it's starting to go out of favor, according to software testing firm Tiobe.

PHP is ranked tenth on Tiobe's list of the most popular languages for November 2021. Since last November, the language has dropped two positions. Python, C, Visual Basic, and JavaScript have since eclipsed it.

PHP is a programming language that was developed in 1994 and peaked as the third most popular language in Tiobe's rankings in 2010. PHP is still Java Programming on Microsoft-owned GitHub, but it has been surpassed by Microsoft's JavaScript superset language Typescript. TypeScript is popular for bigger web apps because it contains a type system that compiles into JavaScript.

Tiobe bases its rankings on programming language queries entered into several search engines. It's one of the resources available to developers for determining which languages are worthwhile to devote time in learning.

Tiobe's list, however, has a few anomalies. JavaScript, for example, is currently ranked seventh. For numerous years, developer analyst RedMonk has ranked JavaScript #1, with PHP ranking fourth in the first quarter of 2021. Python has been the strongest mover in recent years across both indices, because to rising usage of machine learning and data analytics.

Python, C, Java, C++, C#, Visual Basic, JavaScript, and Assembly Language are Tiobe's top ten most popular languages, listed in descending order. SQL, as well as PHP.

Classic Visual Basic, Groovy, Ruby, Swift, R, Perl, Delphi, Go, Fortran, and MATLAB round out the top 20.

SlashData, a startup that provides freelance developer recruiting services, discovered that JavaScript was by far the most popular language. JavaScript has 16.4 million developers, followed by Python (11.3 million), Java (9.6 million), and PHP (7.3 million).
