Who Else Wants To Know The Mystery Behind Olive Oil?
A yearly international symposium on olive oil and health organized by the Yale School of Public Health is heading to the center of the world of olive oil in Spain top experts will meet later this year to examine the potential and impact of what many refer to as "liquid gold."

Co-hosted by the University of Jaen, the symposium will take place from December 9 to 12 in Jaen the city of the state of Andalusia which is the center of Spain's olive oil belt. It is also an area that is being considered as a UNESCO World Heritage site for an olive grove, known as"the Mar de Olivos, or "Sea of Olives." This is the third international symposium hosted since the beginning of 2018. The last time the event was cancelled because of the pandemic.

The event was organized with Vasilis Vasiliou, Ph.D. Vasilis Vasiliou, Ph.D., the Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Epidemiology and chair of Yale School of Public Health's Department of Environmental Health Sciences as well as Tassos C. Kyriakides, Ph.D., a Yale Center for Analytical Sciences (biostatistics) faculty participant, the symposium will bring together academics, business leaders farmers, as well as regional and national policymakers to discuss the still-untapped possibilities of olive trees and their fruits, in particular olive oil.

The Yale School of Public Health is planning to establish an institute called the Yale Institute for Olive Sciences and Health, which will focus on studying the scientific aspects of olive trees, their products and their derivatives, as well as ways to incorporate the fruits and their products in the nutrition of individuals. The institute would also focus on global health issues such as sustainability, circular economy models and climate change.

Vasiliou, who is from Greece, also a major center of olive oil production and a leading consumer, said that a proposal for an olive oil institution should be completed and submitted for review by year's end. Evidence from the past 50 years suggests that olive oil is beneficial to health and well-being, Kyriakides said. A daily intake of 20 grams of olive oil (about two tablespoons) that includes a certain amount of a particular polyphenol (at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol or its derivatives) carries a health claim, approved by the European Food Safety Agency and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, that relates to the protection of blood cholesterol from an oxidative stress.

Spain, which asked to host the co-host of this year's symposium, is the biggest producer of olive oil in the world, accounting for 35% to 40% of its oil production Kyriakides said.
