The Secret Of Olive Oil
n annual international symposium on the health benefits of olive oil hosted by the Yale School of Public Health is heading to the center of the olive oil world in Spain - where leading experts will be gathered later this year to examine the impact and potential of what is sometimes referred to as "liquid gold."

Co-hosted by the University of Jaen, the symposium is scheduled to run from December 9 to 12 in Jaen which is a city located in the region of Andalusia, the heart of the Spanish olive oil region and an area being considered for an UNESCO World Heritage site for an olive grove, known as"the Mar de Olivos, or "Sea of Olives." This is the third international symposium held since 2018. Last year's event was postponed due to the pandemic.

The event was organized in collaboration with Vasilis Vasiliou, Ph.D. The Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Epidemiology and chair of the Yale School of Public Health's Department of Environmental Health Sciences, along with Tassos C. Kyriakides, Ph.D. is a Yale Center for Analytical Sciences (biostatistics) faculty participant, the symposium will bring participants from business, academia farmers, regional and national officials to discuss the untapped opportunities of the Olive tree as well as its fruits, in particular olive oil.

"We're thrilled to be returning. This year's festival is the biggest yet, with an impressive and challenging program. I am extremely excited about bringing all the people who are as enthusiastic about olive oil as I am," declared Vasiliou. "There's nothing like this gathering anywhere else around the globe."

The symposium of this year will cover diverse topics that are central to olive cultivation and the future of olive oil both in terms of human and global health. These comprise:

Recent research has revealed health benefits associated with olive oil.
How climate change is impacting olive groves and how the cultivation of olives could positively impact climate.
Effective olive oil marketing along with business strategies.
Every program session will close with a roundtable discussion and the opportunity to ask questions. This symposium also feature the opportunity to taste olive oil and an educational tour through the olive groves.

The Yale School of Public Health is seeking to launch the Yale Institute for Olive Sciences and Health that will be dedicated to studying the scientific aspects of olive trees, their fruits and their derivatives, as well as ways to further integrate the fruits and their products in the nutrition of individuals. The institute would also focus on issues of global health such as sustainability, circular economy models and climate change.

Vasiliou, who is from Greece and is also a major center of olive oil production and a major consumer, stated that a plan for the establishment of an institute for olive oil needs to be completed and reviewed by the this time next year. Such an institute would serve as a global organization to facilitate and conduct activities in all aspects related about the oil tree, its fruits and products.

There's nothing else like this event anywhere in the world.

Vasilis Vasiliou
"I was raised with olive oil, and have witnessed its benefits firsthand. Mediterranean nutrition has been regarded over the years as being among the most healthy anywhere in the world and its cornerstone is olive oil." said the doctor. "I would like to contribute to establishing Yale's and its School of Public Health's collective leadership in this important subject."

Meanwhile, Kyriakides, an olive oil sommelier not only always is tasting oils from around the world, he takes in large quantities of olive oil daily to cook, as well as his morning Extra virgin olive oil shots.

"It is a good choice for me, and it is absolutely delicious and healthfully nutritious," he said. "The Olive oil and the olive tree have been connecting individuals for centuries. it is our responsibility as public health professionals to ensure the benefits that this superfood may bring to the human body are passed on to those we connect with."

Evidence from the past 50 years strongly indicates that olive oil can promote good health, Kyriakides said. A daily intake of 20 grams of olive oil (about two tablespoons) that includes a certain amount of a particular polyphenol (at at least five mg of hydroxytyrosol as well as its derivatives) carries a health claim, approved by the European Food Safety Agency and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration which is related to the protection of blood fats from oxidative stress.

Spain has asked to host the co-host for the symposium this year, is the biggest producer of olive oil worldwide, accounting for 35% - 40% of its oil production Kyriakides said. In addition, numerous advances in the area of olive agriculture, as well as sustainability and planetary health initiatives have resulted from Spanish practices.

"Now, more than ever before, the need for an international-focused institute is apparent in our efforts to develop better practices for sustainability that benefit both human and planetary health," Kyriakides said.
