One of the problems we come across around Robert Johnson's history is that so little is known about the man himself. We understand he was born in 1911 and that he died at the age of 27 in 1938. A virtuoso guitarist and singer somebody who Eric Clapton refers to as "the most crucial blues singer who ever lived" he was recorded just twice: as soon as in San Antonio in 1936 and again in Dallas a year later on.

A new book released in the summer season of last year aims to shade in some of Johnson's hitherto unidentified background. Entitled Brother Robert: Growing Up With Robert Johnson (Hachette Books), it was authored by Johnson's relative, Annye C Anderson, and it paints a totally different picture to that of the distressed 20-something who checked out the crossroads at midnight to do a deal with the devil.

The book reveals that Johnson might turn his hand to virtually any tune, from jazz and pop music of the day to spirituals. There's even Did you see this? discussed in the book where he sits on an action and plays nursery rhymes for the regional children to sing and dance to.

Up until now, only two images were known to exist, however the 3rd was exposed by stepsister Annye, it having been kept in a bank safe deposit box considering that the 1930s. Annye was born in 1926 to Johnson's stepfather and 3rd other half, Mollie nobody understands who Johnson's real dad was, however his mother's name was Julia, whom Annye describes as 'Mother Julia' in the book.

When Johnson's mom divided up with her husband she couldn't look after her kid and so Johnson went to deal with his stepfather, who taught him to play the guitar. Eventually, Johnson was reunited with his mom. Johnson was quickly to spread his wings, vanishing for days on end, riding on the trains that travelled through the town, a local railroad employee commenting at the time that Johnson spent more time riding the rails than he did.
