Located just west of Richmond, Independence (VA) is the premier public pool and resort golf course in all of Virginia. Recognized by Golf Digest as among the best courses in town, we've reduced playing time by over an hour. This has been accompanied by a concerted effort to educate guests about the inherent risks to swimming and by regularly issuing safety flags.

The inherent risks to swimming and water safety are obvious. Swimming and wading in the Potomac River and its tributaries have historically been a common cause of accidental drownings. The problem dates back to at least the early twentieth century, when the United States passed legislation requiring that owners of residential properties with accessible outdoor pools install protective coverings. The problem is that many owners who installed these safety fences didn't take into account the possibility of long term removal. Whether you're in the process of building a new home or renovating an existing one, you should consider installing a fence around your in-ground pool.

Why should you? Long term removal of pool equipment such as heaters, filters, pumps, and motors can create hazards for swimmers. The loss of life can be significantly increased if a pool cover such as a retractable swimming fence becomes detached from the structure it is securing. Retractable fences are especially useful for smaller pools where there is little chance of losing the fencing completely. Their cost-effectiveness, ease of installation, low maintenance, and safety make them a practical option for landowners with pools.

Why do you need a cover for your swimming pool in the first place? Leaving the swimming facility unattended can result in a number of unfortunate situations. You could end up with a pool in which the swim bladder has sunk to the bottom of the pool, creating a dangerous situation for swimmers. It's also a real danger for children who could inadvertently fall into the water and become drowned. A cover will help prevent this tragedy from occurring.

A cover protects against the negative environmental effects of swimming in water that may have bacteria or other naturally occurring contaminants. An infestation of these types of organisms can create real health issues. The bacteria that naturally occur in the water can find their way into the pool's filter system and be introduced into the swimming water. By preventing swimmers from entering the pool when the swim bladder is full, a protective cover helps prevent this type of problem.

Another way that the presence of a cover can protect against the negative environmental effects of a pool is by keeping debris from being dumped into the water. An example of this would be grass, leaves, twigs, sticks dropping into the pool. As these items get washed along with the water during a swim, they can become wedged under the pool fence or in the filter system. These unwanted objects can result in an accidental drowning if they are not kept in the pool on top of the swim bladder.

A third way that a cover can protect your loved ones involves the prevention of insect infestation. Mites, roaches and bees can all enter the pool when the pool fence is down. If startup or gate is not securely closed, these insects can make their way into the pool and drown the fish. By keeping startup around the swim bladder clean, this problem is easily prevented.
