Recently, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD +), a popular "anti-aging" star in the health product industry, has encountered "subversion". Some research institutions have found that the absorption of NAD + may stimulate the growth of tumor cells, and believe that its anti-aging effect may be based on the promotion of tumor development.

NAD + is an important coenzyme in the human body. Many previous studies believe that NAD + supplementation helps to delay aging. Therefore, many health products supplement NAD + by allowing the human body to ingest nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) or nicotinamide ribose (NR), the precursor of NAD +, so as to achieve the effect of delaying aging. US media reported that investors are investing tens of billions of dollars into this field.

However, on February 18, the American Wistar Institute published an article in the journal Nature Cell Biology. The researchers found that the absorption of NAD + may promote tumor development. Therefore, they reminded that the current popular application of NAD + supplements should carefully consider its potential carcinogenic side effects for more accurate use.

"Longevity medicine" hyped by commercialization

In 2013, the comprehensive and system physiology laboratory affiliated to the school of life sciences of the Federal Institute of technology in Lausanne, Switzerland, published a study, saying that the level of NAD + was reduced in old mice and Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), and the reduction of NAD + level also led to the shortening of worm life.

In addition, having the heredity of NAD + or restoring its level through pharmacology can prevent the metabolic decline associated with aging and improve the longevity of worms.

Later, the magnetic resonance research center of the Department of radiology of the University of Minnesota School of medicine made similar findings in human experiments.

Although the anti-aging effect of NAD + only stays at the research and experimental level for a long time, NAD + supplement, as a long-life health care product, has been commercially hyped and increasingly sought after in recent years.

At present, NAD + supplements are also present in China's health care products market. Surging news searches for keywords such as "NAD + supplement" or "NMN" on an e-commerce platform, and can search for a variety of different types of products, mainly imported products, with prices ranging from hundreds of yuan to thousands of yuan.

In the propaganda of these products, most of them mention keywords such as "anti-aging" and "anti-aging" to attract consumers.

New research casts a shadow over NAD + supplements

The article of Caesar news pointed out that although the drug application research on the anti-aging effect of NAD + on human body is still in the stage of clinical trial, NAD + supplements sold as dietary additives have long flooded the health care product market.

It is reported that NAD + supplements belong to dietary supplement in the regulatory system of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Dietary supplement refers to one or more edible products containing vitamins, minerals and other dietary components. It does not belong to "drugs", but is regulated as "food".

According to the dietary supplement health and Education Act (DSHEA) promulgated by the U.S. Congress in 1994, the listing of dietary supplement products does not need to be approved by FDA, nor does it require the same safety or function test as drugs.

"It is very common that dietary additives are sold without clinical benefit proof," Stephen O'Rahilly, director of the metabolic research laboratory in Cambridge, told Caesar health news.

FDA requires that if the product contains new substances listed after 1994, such as NMN or NR contained in anti-aging products, the product manufacturer shall submit a notification to FDA 75 days before listing, explain the basis for proving the safety of such substances, and indicate the ingredients in the commodity label in accordance with the provisions of FDA and DSHEA.
