Salt and Its Importance
Sea salt is seawater-evaporized salt. It's used for preserving food, cooking, cosmetics, gardening, and as a seasoning in many foods. It's also sometimes called black sea salt, white salt or just plain salt. Sea salt's age, origin, and makeup are different than most other salts.

Salt is actually a bicarbonate of carbonic material containing two hydrogen atoms bonded at the single position. It's most commonly harvested from coastal waters, which are high pressure areas. The harvesting process makes the salt more concentrated, making it less mobile in liquid. Also, because the concentration is higher, it has a much salty taste and texture.

Sea salt is high in sodium (Na+), magnesium (Mg), and potassium (K). Although it contains trace amounts of carbon, it has very little salt content. It's most often harvested from coastal areas and coastal regions where the concentration of evaporation is high. Also, because the concentration is high, it tends to have a sweet, salty taste and texture.

Summary: Sea salt varies from rock salts to table salt with its concentration and saltiness. Evaporated seawater (salt water) is harvested from sea beds throughout the world. The concentration and characteristics vary with location. It contains trace amounts of carbon, but is high in sodium, magnesium, and potassium.

Table salt and iodized salt differ primarily in the type of processing used to remove impurities and increase the concentration of sodium and potassium. Rock salts have been processed to remove sulfur and sulfates, and then graded and treated to remove iron and manganese. Industrial salts are created through different types of pressure and heat treatments. These types of salts generally contain more sodium than other salts.

Iodine is one of the two elements required for normal human consumption. High blood pressure is characterized by an increased salt intake and lower levels of potassium. Rock salt does not contain iodine; however, seawater can provide iodine for people who take iodine supplements. Many sea salt products also contain iodine.

Most grains are broken down to salt when they pass through the digestive tract. When grains are combined with other ingredients, the bran and germ parts are left behind and are used to salt crackers and cookies. During the process, gluten grains are released which have none of the mineral and taste components of table salt. This is why table salt has no taste and no salt taste. People who don't eat much table salt are not recommended to take iodine supplements since iodine is not found in naturally occurring trace minerals.

The texture and overall quality of table salt may vary depending on the supplier. Locally available salt may be of a better quality than bulk imported products. Locally available products usually come from smaller facilities and are harvested right after harvesting the grains. The salt may not have undergone any heat treatment; therefore it may have a lower melting point. Locally grown salt has often been found to have higher mineral content than those imported from abroad. However, quality control of locally grown products is not as stringent as that for imported products.

A high-quality salt may be harvested by evaporating seawater and then cleaning the salt before it is exported. In some places, the salt is harvested by a natural underground process which involves boiling and filtering seawater to remove small crystals and microorganisms. After this process, the salt is left to dry on its own. Evaporating salt mines are located all over the world, but the most famous ones are located in Mexico and Brazil. Brazil's Salinas Areaburo and Tonca de Assimba are some of the largest underground salt mines in the world. These mines are considered the largest in the world because they cover an area of 13 square kilometers.

There are two types of salt commonly used in cooking. Natural sea salt and table salt differ in their chemical composition and physical properties. Sea salt contains more magnesium, sodium and chloride while table salt consists of only minerals which have higher melting points. Natural sea salt comes from fossilized shells of ancient oysters while table salt is made from salt rocks found on land and in rivers. Both types of salt can be purchased in supermarkets but the more expensive all-natural variety is more reliable because it is derived from a byproduct of other industries, such as mining.

Salt's mineral properties affect its taste. In addition to having a salty taste, salt affects the body in different ways, depending on how it is taken in and on the frequency of its use. People who take excessive amounts of salt in their diet, especially salt substitutes with different flavors and colors, experience various symptoms, such as hypertension, arthritis, kidney stones, and gastric ailments. High amounts of salt can even contribute to fluid retention, which can eventually lead to diabetes.

Cooking with salt affects the mineral and taste of food. Certain foods, such as cheese or eggs, become richer and moister when salt is added. Likewise, certain types of food taste better when salt is added. However, the majority of people do not notice any negative effects from adding salt to their diets. With proper salt usage, there are no ill effects for your taste buds, kidneys or your blood pressure.
