Phoenix atau biasa disebut Bennu dalam mitologi Mesir Kuno dan Phonicia merupakan burung legendaris yang keramat. burung ini merupakan mahluk mistis berwujud burung api yang hidup abadi di berbagai kebudayaan. ia adalah raja dari segala burung yang ada. digambarkan dengan segala keindahan, keanggunan dan kekuatannya. burung api ini memiliki bulu yang sangat indah berwarna merah keemasan. mempunyai ekor yang panjangnya dapat mencapai 2 meter lebih. maka digambarkan burung Phoenix tidak pernah berdiri diatas tanah, namun disebuah batang kayu.
dalam mitos bahwa diyakini Phoenix dapat hidup selama 50 atau 1461 tahun. ketika burung tu merasa kematiannya sudah dekat (dalam siklus 500-1461 tahun) Phoenix membakar dirinya sendiri. setelah tiga hari, dari abunya muncul burung Phoenix muda baru yang akan bangkit untuk memulai hidup baru. siklus hidup burung Phoenix seperti regenerasi, bangkit setelah mati, lalu muncul sebagai sosok baru. juga Phoenix membangun sarang dari ranting kayu manis dimana ia akan membakar dirinya jika merasa kematiannya sudah dekat.
