Salt has many names including sea salt, table salt, rock salt, and processed salt. There are differences in the chemical makeup of the three types of salt. Each type has its own benefits and pitfalls. Table salt is generally the least expensive, but there are ways to greatly reduce your intake of this seemingly innocent yet important substance.
Dead Sea salt is known throughout the world. It has a reputation for its high mineral content as well as its reputation as one of the most effective natural cleansing supplements on the market. Although it is used mainly as a cleanser, research has shown that it can have significant health benefits. Dead Sea salt contains similar mineral content to table salt by volume.
Sea salt is harvested primarily from the oceans surrounding the Dead Sea, Israel and Jordan. Salt is usually evaporated during the drying process and the resulting salt is used for food and as a fertilizer. It is no longer considered to be good for cooking purposes. Sea salt is table salt, but it does have some interesting characteristics. It is slightly more porous, softer and has a smooth texture.
As for the trace minerals found in sea salts, they come primarily from minerals dissolved in seawater. Trace minerals found in sea salts are important dietary elements for many people. They are necessary to human development and help maintain a healthy body. Some sea salts have been shown to help with the reduction of blood pressure and to regulate heart rate.
Oceanic and fresh-water varieties are harvested in different ways. Oceanic salt is harvested by boiling the seawater to evaporate it and then harvesting the salt through various mechanical means (drying, pressurized water etc). black truffle salt is harvested in a similar way, except that the water is not boiled and the salt is extracted through a process using dryers.
The harvesting and drying processes are part of what make salt fall into the "ourmet" category. Different areas and environments produce salt with varying qualities. One example is the Dead Sea salt deposits that contain rich mineral content, but it is the high quality seawater that is responsible for the unique mineral composition that makes the Dead Sea salt one of the most popular natural dietary supplements in the world.
Because there is so much variation in table salt production, it is difficult to give an accurate answer on the amount of sodium content that is contained in any type of salt. A precise number can only be determined by consulting with a professional grade salt calculator. Though a person may be able to obtain some information by looking at the quantity of table salt that he or she eats, he or she will not be able to determine the nutritional value of the salt in a typical serving.
The crunchy texture is often the salt users' favorite part of any type of salt. Unfortunately, the lack of research on the characteristics and health benefits of seawater-derived salts leaves many people skeptical. In the end, a consumer needs to decide what is more important: the crunchy texture or the mineral content? If a person truly values his or her health, a visit to the health food store or seeking out salt from an online supplier is highly recommended.
Salt is largely made up of minerals and these include magnesium, calcium, iron, sodium, zinc, and copper. Each mineral has different positive and negative effects on the body depending on which mineral is most abundant in the mineral solution. One of the most notable effects of sea salt is its evaporation. Salt that undergoes evaporation has a lighter color, a sweeter taste, and a lower sodium concentration than table salt.
Evaporated sea salt has no moisture in it so its shelf life is quite brief. Salt crystals in sea salt are harvested by a process called 'aerial phredating'. pink salt and sulfates are separated by high pressure and high temperature and then the solution is sprayed with water. This process leaves the crystals with a fine dust residue which can be further processed to produce sea salt.
It is difficult to predict how long any particular salt will last in storage. The best you can do is to store table salt carefully to maximize the shelf life. As with table salt, it is important to avoid touching your face with table salt. We recommend that you store your salt in a separate container from your face.
