Visiting the Eiffel Tower: Highlights, Tips & Tours
The Eiffel Tower (La Tour Eiffel), is a symbol of Paris and one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. Visitors arrive with a vivid picture of the monument on a keychain or postcard. Yet, the Eiffel Tower continues to amaze. The architectural masterpiece soars to 324 meters in height. The structure, made up of 18,000 parts of iron, is held together with 2.5 million rivets. It's a feat of ingenuity. The Eiffel Tower is a massive structure, but its lattice construction makes it seem light. This graceful tower is also known by the "Iron Lady"

Eiffel Tower
Many people are puzzled by the unusual architectural form of the Eiffel Tower. Its original purpose was to be the entrance to the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World's Fair). The Journal Officiel started a competition to find a tower that could be displayed at the fair in 1887. Gustave Eiffel, an entrepreneur, and Stephen Sauvestre, an architect, were the co-authors of the winning project.
Although the tower was built for a mere 20-year period, it is now the most prominent feature of Paris' skyline. Tourists often consider this iconic a highlight of their Paris trip.
Pillars of the Eiffel Tower
The esplanade at the base of the Eiffel Tower is dominated by four massive pillars, which support the entire weight of the 10,100-ton monument. Gustave Eiffel's engineers Emile Nouguier and Maurice Koechlin worked on mathematical principles to ensure stability.
The tower's weight is evenly distributed throughout the framework so that the curved base can hold the structure in place even under extreme wind conditions. At the ground level, the pressure exerted is only four kilograms per square centimeter, roughly the same weight distribution of a normal-sized adult on the seat of a chair.
The gigantic pillars provide a striking first impression–they are much larger than one would expect and are spacious enough to hold ticket offices, staircases, and elevators.
Visitors must first go to either the East Pillar or West Pillar to take the elevator up to the first and second floors. The East Pillar and West Pillar have ticket offices, where visitors can purchase tickets on the spot. It is recommended that you purchase tickets online in advance.
Those who prefer to climb the stairs (up to the first and second floors) should head to the South Pillar (Pilier Sud) ticket office, where tickets for the stairs can be purchased on the spot.
The West Pillar (Pilier Ouest) has an information desk and a boutique that sells souvenirs. The East Pillar (Pilier Est) has a kiosk that sells Eiffel Tower mementos.
The gardens around the Eiffel Tower's esplanade have been recently renovated with gorgeous landscaping. Visitors can admire the lush greenery while waiting in line to enter the tower. Tip: the East entrance in the gardens is usually less crowded than the South entrance.
The esplanade also has a cafeteria, where visitors can grab snacks or have a casual meal before exploring the Eiffel Tower.
First Floor First level
You have the option to either ride the elevator, or walk the 360-degrees to the first floor. The first floor, which floats at a height of 57 metres, is the ideal viewing platform for admiring Paris' architecture.
The first floor features over 2,000 square metres of outdoor space and is made up of a transparent floor and glass pavilions. You can also enjoy the breathtaking views from terrace seating.
There are public toilets on this level, as well as a souvenir shop that sells many French products. A cafeteria serves quick meals, sweets, and snacks. eritrea city asmara can even get your mail stamped with a custom postmark at the post office. The brasserie located on the first floor of the building is currently being renovated and will reopen in 2022.
Second Floor Second level view
The second floor, at 125m above the ground, offers breathtaking views of Paris from a height of 120 meters. The buildings along the Seine River can be easily distinguished, whereas the first level has less perspective, and on the top of the Eiffel Tower, the sights appear small in the distance.
Visitors can use the elevator or the stairs to get from the ground or first levels. On the second floor, you will find public toilets, two gift shops and a cafeteria. The viewing platform also includes telescopes that allow you to admire the Paris scene. Le Jules Verne is a Michelin-starred restaurant that offers exceptional views from its second level. The restaurant offers multi-course meals that combine classic French cuisine with modern twists. When arriving at the Eiffel Tower, guests may take the private elevator from the South Pillar that leads directly to the restaurant.

The Eiffel Tower's top level is not for the faint-hearted or those who fear heights. It stands at 276m above sea level. The summit is several meters higher with its radio antenna. Visitors must use the elevator at the second floor to reach the top.
A small viewing area is available inside, while another platform can be found in the open. The breathtaking panoramas can be seen for up to 70 km on clear days from this amazing vantage point. From this height, Paris' monuments appear small.
The top level contains Gustave Eiffel’s Office, which was restored to its original condition. Wax models depict Gustave Eiffel with his daughter Claire, who are seen meeting Thomas Edison.
The 1:50 scale model, which depicts the Eiffel Tower's top-level in its original form, is also on display. It was created in 1889.
