What Is Soft Washing?

Soft washing is a process that involves getting the same effect by doing nothing. It has to be gentle, or it will damage the object. It can't just hit it without thinking, because that's what hitting is for. If you just hit something hard enough, it will get damaged, and no amount of soft washing will fix it. So soft washing has to be gentle; in fact, soft washing has to be thoughtless.

<br>When we think about cleaning something, we usually think about hitting it: using a surface scrubber to remove particles, using a brush to remove dirt and grime and stains and salt and whatever else we don't like in our kitchen or bathroom or car or office or wherever we've cleaned it. We think about applying force—hitting—and when we do that to something that isn't fragile, like a kitchen countertop, we're able to get rid of most of the stuff on the countertop without damaging the surface underneath (and without leaving behind residue). But if you try to hit anything with a scrubby sponge or a brush while you're holding an expensive antique vase in your hands—or even a small piece of art—you'll damage the vase whether you want to or not. The antique vase wasn't designed to take a beating from scrub brushes; it was designed to stand up under gentle pressure from fingers, from tools designed for use on fragile surfaces.

<br>It is well known that you can't get good water out of hard, abrasive materials like sand or brick. And that's an important reason to use soft washing methods. However, soft washing is also good for other reasons.

<br>Soft washing isn't just about getting the dirt out; it is also about reducing wear and tear on the surfaces you are cleaning. Soft washing methods don't involve repeated scrubbing with abrasive materials or rinsing with very hard water (which would wear away the surface).
