If you start shipping freight in high volumes, it's time for ocean freight. From choosing the mode that's right for you to calculating transit times and costs, here is your guide to everything ocean.
Ocean Freight Meaning: What Is Ocean Freight?
Containerized ocean freight transportation involves moving goods by sea.
Exporters and importers primarily transport goods by sea. 90 percent of all shipments are made by ocean freight and sea freight. International freight delivery by courier, standard air freight, and express air freight are all faster, but also more expensive. In general, these other methods are used for smaller shipments, or for products of high value.
Some freight forwarders offer express shipping in case ocean freight is too slow, but air freight is too expensive. As fast as air freight, this service may be less expensive. It streamlines ocean freight processes by identifying only the fastest ocean services and premium trucking services.
Why Ship By Sea?
Capacity and value One container holds 10000 beer bottles! And ocean freight is cheaper. Any shipment weighing more than 500 kg is generally too heavy for air freight. Use this chargeable weight calculator to work out whether you will be charged by actual weight or dimensional weight for your light shipment. FBX provides live international shipping rates.
The number of restrictions on the transport of dangerous goods is lessened through the harmonisation of international law, national law, and regulations of individual carriers. As a general rule, air cargo is more restricted than ocean freight, including: gases (e.g. lamp bulbs), all things flammable (e.g. Items that are toxic or corrosive (e.g., perfume, Samsung Galaxy Note 7) should be avoided. batteries), magnetic substances (e.g. In addition to speakers, oxidizers, biochemical products (e.g. chemical medicines), and public health risks (e.g. untanned hides). For more information, please see our Hazardous Material Table.
CO2 emissions from ocean freight are negligible compared to air freight. The research found that for 5000 kilometers of ocean freight, each ton will generate 150 kilograms of CO2 emissions, while air freight emits 6605 kilograms of CO2.

What Are The Downsides Of Ocean Freight?
Speed aircraft are about 30 times faster than ocean liners; passenger jets cruise at 575 mph, while ocean liners steam at 16-18 mph. There is no surprise then that a shipment going by air freight from China to the US usually takes at least 20 days longer.
Ocean freight requires more days to reach its destination due to congestion, customs delays, and adverse weather conditions. In most cases, tracking technology in air freight is more advanced than that in ocean freight. This means ocean freight is more likely to be misplaced than air freight. The rates are especially high when the shipment is less than a container load. Despite that, digitization has improved ocean freight reliability.
Unlike air cargo, ocean freight is more likely to be damaged or destroyed. Because of the longer transit time and because ships move around more, it takes longer. However, you shouldn't be worried about ocean cargo falling off ships. Although the urban myth says 10,000 containers are lost every year, the truth is that only 546 of the 120 million movements per year end up in the water. Even less likely is piracy. Ocean Freight forwarder A few hotspots in recent years have been the Horn of Africa, the Gulf of Guinea, and the Malacca Strait.
Ocean Freight Services
Sea freight services also fall into two types: full container loads (FCLs) and less than container loads (LCLs). Several shipments are packed into one container with LCL. The forwarder will need to do more work, as there will be additional paperwork involved, as well as consolidating multiple shipments into a container and deconsolidating them at the other end. This gives LCL three disadvantages:
FCL shipments are delivered faster than LCL shipments. Usually you should allow an extra week or two for LCL.
Having LCL increases the risk for damage, misplacement, and loss.
LCL costs more per cubic meter.
In general, the shipping rates for FCL are much lower than for LCL, so it may be worthwhile to use a full container once your shipment grows large enough, even if your shipment does not fill the entire container. The tipping point for upgrading from LCL to FCL (those are the smallest sized containers) is in the range of 15 cubic meters.
Sea Freight Rates per kg
With the exception of particularly heavy goods, LCL is usually priced by volume, rather than by weight.
For most products, these rules of thumb can be used when selecting the most cost-effective method:
Over 500 kg, air freight becomes uneconomical.
In general, ocean freight costs around $2-$4 / kg, and a China-US shipment takes anywhere from 30-40 days.
A China-US shipment between 150 kg and 500 kg is economically transportable by air freight, and it will take 8-10 days.
A few days faster, but more expensive, is express air freight.
Those packages weighing less than 150 kg are best transported by courier (express freight).
