READ THIS BEFORE PRINTING LARGE FORMAT
In large format digital printing, materials are printed that would be too large for a standard commercial printing press. The final product for large format printing is quite large, so determining the right resolution is important. Traditionally, the rules for calculating file sizes and resolutions do not apply to large format printing. The conventional method of printing involves working at 300-dpi (also known as dots per inch), but large format printing reverses this method. It is not the solution to large scale printing projects to increase resolution by uploading a bigger file. It will simply end up being one really big file that won't be able to provide the desired resolution in the final product.
The following are resolution guides for large format digital printing:
To determine large format digital printing resolutions, follow these tips:
When an object is viewed from a distance, the eyes will be less effective at catching details. Most companies measure their products on the diagonal, because the larger the image, the more distance one needs to stand to see it in its entirety.
The viewing conditions of an image must be considered when printing large scale. Is the image illuminated enough? Could the viewer be too close to get a good view? Proper large format printing resolution must be considered with regard to viewing variables.
A soft focus or low contrast image can be printed at a lower resolution. Edges with high contrast can make a lack of resolution more noticeable. Be sure to consider the fine details of the image when determining the print resolution.
Large Scale Printing File Types
There are two general types of large format printing files:
(EPS) is an Adobe Illustrator file format used for vector-based images. Besides text, this type of file can also include graphics. printed graphics of the image is normally included as opposed to vector instructions for drawing the image.
The TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) format supports a range of color depths between 1 and 24 bits as well as lossy and lossless compression. Further, TIFFs are able to support multiple pages and layers.
Before sending the original file to print, don't flatten it, no matter what printing file type is used. Keep an editable file to make the design and printing process easier.
