Using Startup Cap Table Templates
A Startup Cap Table template is a spreadsheet, usually created by early stage startups or young start-ups, which clearly identifies the ownership structure of an enterprise. The spreadsheet depicts who owns what, the total equity you own and what percentage each entity/individual owns. It is important to understand that a Startup Cap Table must be updated every time you add new stock or alter the percentage of ownership. If you do not do so, it will no longer accurately represent the current situation on your enterprise.

There are many types of Startup Cap Table templates. Most are designed for Excel. There are also those designed for Power Point presentations. These electronic shares allow your startup founders to quickly indicate who holds which positions and, sometimes, other information pertinent to the health of their business. They can also use these electronic forms for tax purposes. In many cases, these electronic documents are used in connection with investors, including angel investors.

For startup founders who are unfamiliar with the Excel template, it is designed to be easy to manipulate. All you have to do is copy and paste the information, customize it to fit the particular form, then print out the results. That's really all there is to it. For experienced start-up entrepreneurs, this can be a great way to share ownership without having to go through the trouble of re-creating the Excel sheet. Instead, it can be printed right onto your business cards.

In a basic version of a startup cap table, there is a simple bar chart with two column heads. One represents the equity of the corporation and the other, the fraction of equity owned by each shareholder. There is also usually a column for the individual shareholder along with his or her balance in the "aths" category. This data is used to calculate the value of the company's equity. Sometimes, the number of shares outstanding is also included. There is also a line graph with one line representing the total number of shares owned by each shareholder and another representing the cumulative total.

The Excel template for a startup cap table comes with an explanation of how to interpret the data. The first column in the left hand side pane of the template shows the name of the shareholder. The name is usually followed by an appropriate word such as owner, director, or partner. Each line in the chart represents one share held by that shareholder. The vertical axis on the chart represents the equity of the company and the horizontal axis indicates the fraction of equity owned by each shareholder.

Another important feature of the Excel startup cap table template is the "Pre INV" column. This is where you enter the total amount of money needed to launch the business. You can choose from several different investment options such as general public offering (GPO), capital stock purchase (CSP), or private placement order of preference (PPO). If you are planning to finance your business through financing from inside the company, you will need to include the amount of cash needed from outside investors as well. You can also enter an estimated annual return rate and discount rate for the business's revenue.

For some companies, it is very helpful to have separate spreadsheets for internal purposes and for external ones. For instance, if there are two or more departments that generate a huge amount of revenue, it would be very cumbersome to manage them as a single piece of information using a dedicated excel spreadsheet. You might end up duplicating your work because of too many rows and columns. To avoid this, you should include the departments in your startup cap table template so you can keep everything in one place. In addition, keep your daily work in separate tabs so you won't have to refresh the page often.

When using the startup cap table template in Excel, keep in mind that all information should be tabulated in the right way. Make sure you label each cell accordingly with the name of the investor and the valuation of the equity. This will make it easier for you to identify changes in terms of price. Also, keep the tabulation constant by keeping the equity price the same throughout the year and only presenting one data set per month instead of two or more data sets per day.
