There's no convinced number, but a certain percentage of the those that watch fansubs will end-up buying anime merchandises, which includes DVDs by yourself (I fit in this category).

Losses with the people to whom did not purchase? Probably just a minuscule compared to the HUGE advertising campaign that the anime got. Those who would not really buy following watching the anime certainly have bought the DVD/manga initially anyway (I think).

Personally, I favor watching the fansubs compared to the DVD variations. Monetary issue? Maybe absolutely, maybe not really. But the important factor is due to the QUALITY of the fansubs. Actually, I prefer examining the "subbed" version as opposed to watching the "dubbed" type because, in my opinion, the Japanese comments sounds even more suited to the animation than English noises. Well, really just a matter of exclusive preference.

A handful of fansubbers surely made a more satisfactory job than those of the companies. This is also true for the manga editions too. A lot of companies go for the quick profit. Put up a few cr*ppy snel and that's it! SOME of them also doesn't have virtually any respect to get the appearance of the anime/manga. This p*sses many anime/manga fans apart. Darn.
