Most severely affected were communities that had only one resource that were thriving due to a closed loop ecosystem that was interdependent with factories, mines and production units.

This was most evident in Zhitigara. Zhitigara is a region of northwest Kazakhstan that had relied on local mining to provide its manufacturing output for many decades. After the Soviet era local industries were plagued not only by outdated practices and equipment, but also a lack of focus on the needs of customers as well as a myriad of obstacles that were not market-based, which slowed creativity. Only through implementing broad-ranging changes in management; focusing on the quality of the refinement and enrichment process; and reinvesting heavily in safety and health were capable of transforming and expand a failing local company. Though you might say it was innovation through necessity, the lessons we learned proved valuable.

I was able to learn from the mistakes of others and the ways in which they can be improved. In my later years of professional life, this belief drove the evolution and growth of Kusto Group from a small local-owned business to a multinational corporation with multiple resources with its headquarters in Singapore as well as operations across the globe.
