Mansfield:
-Bliss: "Bertha wanted to ask if it wasn't rather dangerous to let her clutch at a strange dog's ear. But she did not dare to. She stood watching them, her hands by her side, like the poor little girl in front of the rich girl with the doll" (2).
-At the Bay: "Linda was so astonished at the confidence of this little creature...Ah no, be sincere. That was not what she felt; it was something far different, it was something so new, so...The tears danced in her eyes; she breathed in a small whisper to the boy, "Hallo, my funny!" (11).
^--> both showcase some inability to seem too concerned about your own children??? idk
-At the Bay: "Stanley wanted to say, "I was thinking of you the whole time I bought them." It was true, but for some reason he couldn't say it. "Let's go in," said he." (21)

Woolf:
-Slater's Pins: Fanny chooses not to ask Julia Craye about her life and instead makes up a backstory, just like narrator in Unwritten Novel makes up backstory about the woman ("Minnie") on the train. --> suggests that some things are better in the imagination, some questions too personal, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to understand each other
--> Slater's Pins: "Did Miss Craye actually go to Slater's and buy pins then, Fanny Wilmot asked herself, transfixed for a moment" (1).
--> An Unwritten Novel: "Have I read you right? But the human face -- the human face at the top of the fullest sheet of print holds more, withholds more" (117). OR "'Much obliged, I'm sure'. (But why do you look about you? Hilda won't come to the station, nor John; and Moggridge is driving at the far side of Eastbourne.)" (121) "it's you I embrace, you I draw to me -- adorable world!" (121)

Joyce:
-Araby: "If I go, I said, I will bring you something" (2) --> clearly wants to say so much more than this, we get pages full of his thoughts about how in love with her he is, but this is all that gets said
-Araby: "I did not smile. My aunt said to him energetically:" (3) --> clearly wants to yell at his uncle for being late and forgetting, we can make up in our minds all this stuff he wants to say, but he's stunted by the authority of his aunt/uncle
-The Dead: "Gabriel did not answer for his retort had heated him" (8) --> Gabriel cannot speak of why he hates his country
