Roundup: Who was the person who invent it?
John Franz, a Monsanto Chemist, found that Glyphosate is an active ingredient in Roundup in 1970. The use of pre-emergent herbicides was common in the ag sector in the early days. They were sprayed before the crop or weeds appeared. Our research had already identified both plant- and microbial genetics that conferred higher herbicide resistance. Roundup Ready plants were first evaluated on the field by USDA in 1987. This was a genetically modified version of Roundup-tolerant tomato plants. In the following years, the Roundup Ready trait from bacteria was discovered and isolated.

Roundup Ready Soybeans are a genetically engineered type of soybeans which has had its DNA changed to protect them from Roundup, the herbicide. This allows farmers to apply Roundup Ready herbicides in order to eliminate weeds, but not their crops.

It is evident the fact that Roundup Ready crops were introduced in 1996 and changed agriculture and agricultural science. Roundup resistance was immediately acknowledged by farmers and widespread adoption began. Today, more that 90 percent of U.S. soybeans and cotton make use of Roundup Ready crops. Along with simplifying and improving weed control methods which improved yields of crops, Roundup Ready crops reduced the amount of tillage required and decreased the expense of equipment and made harvesting easier due to "cleaner fields" with fewer weeds. Increased adoption of conservation-tillage has had a major impact on the environment. Farmers can cut down on their carbon footprint and energy use by decreasing plowing. But this also helps preserve soil structure and reduces erosion. It was equivalent to removing 28.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
