Let me share with you the story of my last Arctic cruise. It sounded amazing, National Geographic trip thru the ice, and back with polar bears, and many other wildlife. It would be ice wherever eyes could see , and snow all around. Man-made tools were used to defeat the elements and break through the frozen wilderness of the northern wilderness. It sounded like an epic undertaking, an epic fight against the north and the weather, as well as the pole.

I wasn't quite aware of the things that were about to occur. I didn’t know that just two days into the 14-day journey and my Internet connection would stop and I would be without internet for 10 consecutive days. It was a shock to me when it occurred. Any trip, no matter how remote or hard, should result in a disconnection from technology. Not just do I have an unfinished business as well, I was not prepared for it.

These days , nobody is concerned about having to shut down. Internet is everywhere and if your home network is having issues There are a lot of nearby McDonalds which offer free WiFi access. You can bring your laptop to a Starbucks and use the free WiFi connection to access the Internet whenever you want. There is no restaurant or café that is able to provide electricity in the north. You can either be offline or bring a satellite internet connection.


I cannot afford a satellite phone. It's too expensive and especially for Internet access. Before I leave for the unknown, I will have a large audio and video library. The last time I was on the road, I had two songs. Both were downloaded in a slow manner at the time, and I was limited to 3 jazz songs and a famous song that I didn't know its name. This is it. Four songs over two weeks of absolute nothingness. I'd have planned ahead if I knew this was the case. convert to mp3 I would have stuffed my laptop with TV shows movies, music videos, and also audio files with music and podcasts. I could listen to my favourite podcasts for hours. It's easy to download them, convert into mp3s and then save on my computer. Then, I can lay in couch and listen to podcasts I like at home. This could have been my gold hour, or two weeks worth of gold. It ended up being two weeks of looking at a ceiling and sprinting to catch passengers when there was a sound coming from the corridors.

The trip was empty both literally and metaphorically.. I've never felt so bored. I knew that the ice was too thick and the boat had no choice but to turn around and return to the shores of civilization. This was not unexpected. However, the hours of downtime could have been listening to podcasts, viewing DIY videos on home repair, or simply enjoying music. The next time, I'll convert Youtube videos into mp4 and MP3 formats using my laptop. No need to be down music is always uplifting your spirits. Hulu and Netflix apps can download shows and movies offline. It is also possible to bring them with you on your long arctic trek. Be sure to not waste your time with boredom. Good luck!
