Chinese Medicine and Massage - An Interdisciplinary Therapy
It might sound exotic or even funny, but Tui Na massage is a real type of massage. It has been practiced in China for over 4000 years. It is essentially a kind of massage that is performed on the surface of the skin. Tui Na is also referred to as Na Fu, or Hand Stick massage. Its origin can be traced back to a form of massage called Tui Na (Wind and Water Massage) which was used by the Chinese Emperors for thousands of years ago. Chinese people still use Tui Na as a method of massage in contemporary times.

Tui Na is an alternative therapy that is similar to Acupuncture. There are no bandages or needles involved. Tui na can be described as an energy therapy technique or as an art form. It is a type of traditional Chinese medicine and is typically used alongside moxibustion or fire cupping, Chinese herbs and tai-chi, as well as other Chinese forms of internal medicine.

Tui Na is one of the Chinese remedies referred to collectively as "FoGi". These alternative medicines are derived from ancient China, as is evident from the name. Certain forms of this type of medicine are part of what we call TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). This ancient form of medicine has been adopted by western doctors and practitioners of massage therapy in a variety of forms.

The purpose of any massage is to relieve tension and restore flexibility. This is achieved by penetrating through the superficial layers of the skin to the muscles that support it in the deeper layers. The stratum corneum is the superficial layer of the skin. It is believed that the key to myofascial release is to gently press the fascia where tight muscles are situated.

It is now possible to use massage chairs to provide myofascial releases techniques in massage treatments. Certain situations require the use of specially designed rollers to penetrate deeply into the tissue. This technique is used to replace joints, repair soft tissue, and increase mobility of certain muscles. Massaging movements may be very deep, penetrating all the way to the bone, and they can also target very specific muscle groups. The rollers are typically made of soft or leather and are secured close to the body that they can be controlled. The rolling motions utilize the body's natural power to push the massage chair back towards the client.

Acupuncture is another branch of Chinese medicine that is used to massage chairs. Acupuncture is based on the belief that the cause of pain is imbalance , and that this imbalance can be corrected by injecting needles into specific regions of the body. Acupuncturists believe needles release natural chemicals within the body that alleviate pain and discomfort. The needles can be utilized in conjunction with other techniques. For instance the needles are positioned into pressure points where they can stimulate healing in the targeted areas. This form of treatment is extremely effective for mild to moderate pain.

While massage therapists can administer these fundamental treatments, many are now using Chinese medicine into their offerings. Massage chairs can be fitted with devices that allow the application of acupuncture to clients during massage. Chinese medicine is more holistic than western methods and massage therapists may include a mixture of Chinese herbs in their client's therapy. Massage chairs commonly include an acupuncture block as part of the therapy.

There are many benefits of receiving acupuncture and Chinese medicine on a regular basis. Massage therapy can boost blood circulation and boost the efficiency of the lymphatic system. Massage also enhances the capacity of the body to heal itself by focusing on the mechanical tissues of the body. Chinese treatments target the muscles, promoting increased flexibility, strength, and energy. It is not unusual that a patient undergoes many treatments with Chinese massage and medicine to achieve optimal results. A qualified massage therapist is able to offer patients a comprehensive massage program that will enhance their mobility, health and overall wellness.
