What is Watsu?
Massage therapy refers to manipulating soft tissues for the purpose of alleviating pain or restoring health. This type of treatment is also referred to as "Mesotherapy", and it is founded on the same principles as chiropractic medicine. The patient lies on the massage table or chair during this type of treatment. Although the client does not have to lie face down, many clients prefer to be placed on their backs to make it easier to access all the parts of their bodies.

This type of therapy uses pressure to relieve pain, relax the body, and/or encourage healing. There are two kinds of massage therapy which include full-body massage as well as massage chairs. Massage chairs simulate manual therapy. Full-body massage requires the client lay on a table with their eyes closed and/or spend some time in a room heated. In massage chairs, the massage techniques are preprogrammed to achieve various effects, from simple relief of sore muscles, to full-body massage.

Massage therapy has many benefits, including the stimulation of tissue repair and the increase in muscle tension. In a full-body massage the massage therapist applies constant pressure to various areas of the body. Typically, the massage therapist will start with the feet and work up. The back and abdominal areas will be massaged and the major muscle groups , such as neck, shoulders, elbows, feet, buttocks, and back. Additionally the massage therapist could apply stretching or resistance to specific muscles or parts of the body.

It is essential to know what the practitioner is doing in order to provide gentle and effective stretches. For example, in watsu, when the massage therapist makes the motion of thrusting to move from toe to foot the therapist must be sure that their hands are firm and that they do not leave marks on the surface of the toes. By performing the proper stretching on the body of the client the practitioner can increase flexibility and decrease soreness.

In the traditional Japanese massage practitioner, they also perform techniques that encourage circulation, such as placing the hand or forefinger in the palm of their hand for about a minute. By using deep, slow breathing, the practitioner then stimulates specific points on the palm to remove the finger. This is called Tsukubai. Practitioners may also use tapping or kokyunage. This is a technique that improves circulation and eliminates blood clots that are stagnant.

This type of massage seeks to restore mobility to the joints of the spine and strengthen the soft tissues surrounding it. As in traditional watsu, applying light pressure in the direction of joint range of motion is required to reduce stiffness and facilitate healing. To get the maximum effect, the massage practitioner should not just apply pressure directly, but also stretch muscles in the direction of joints and cartilage changes. This technique can be used to stretch the muscles, like the lordosis (lifting one leg up in the air) and kegels (or pelvic tilts). Prevention of injury is possible through properly stretching the muscles and soft tissue.

This kind of massage is also known by the term "hot and cold" as it incorporates both kinds of stretching. The one is typically performed using cold compression while the other is performed using warm compresses. Hot compresses can be used for as long as two to five minutes if you have swelling or inflammation due to an injury. There are many types of warm and cool compressions. The feeling of numbness could be a sign that the therapist has applied too excessive heat. It is also possible to experience discomfort or pain if compressions are too hot.

Watsu massage promotes flexibility, balance and strength. However, since the techniques used were changed from traditional techniques to a more scientific approach, many of these benefits have been lost. The decrease in muscle tension is a benefit that's still possible. Also, if you are struggling with a lack of flexibility, this massage could help to improve your range of motion. There are also early 1980s practitioners who believe that the earlier versions of watsu were not as effective as they are nowadays.
