Bats are the only true flying mammal. They hibernate between December and February. Bat parents have 1 baby each year. The babies are born between June and July. They can fly at around just three years old. Bats roost in trees, roofs and caves. Bats like to sleep up-side down. They feed in gardens and along woodland edges. Some bats drink water out of rivers and lakes. Bats have poor eyesight. They use echolocation instead. They make squeaks and listen for the echo. The time the sound takes to bounce back tells them how far their prey is from them. The finger bones in a bat's wing are long. They have skin stretched between them to make a wing. Owls are predators. They hunt at night. Their powerful hearing and their superb eyesight helps them to locate their prey. Owls only live for 2 or 3 years in the wild. In captivity they can live for up to 20 years. Families usually have one brood of eggs and 3 or 4 hatching. Owls nest in tree holes or old farm buildings. They hunt in fields, hedgegrows and heaths. They regurgiate any bits that their prey cannot digest.
