One glue trap ends days of searching for venomous zebra cobras in north Raleigh.
Despite the efforts of animal control officers and law enforcement, a glue trap was finally able to capture the deadly snake on a north Raleigh porch on Wednesday night, ending an eventful 48-hour period that attracted attention throughout North Carolina.

We guided the cobra into a red bucket and took it to a safe location so that we could fully remove the glue from its body.

At youtube.com, a striped snake crawled out of the siding of a house on Sandringham Drive onto the front porch of a home earlier in the day. In looking around, the hood of the vulture was visible.

Camera crews were moved back after the officers confirmed it was the snake before attempting to catch it.

911 call from that same home sparked the search in the early morning Tuesday.

ARLINGTON, N.C. Following a 48-hour saga that garnered attention from across North Carolina, a venomous zebra cobra was captured on a north Raleigh porch on Wednesday night, coming to an end in North Carolina after nearly 48 hours of turmoil.

Cobras were placed inside red buckets and taken to a safe location so the glue could be removed completely from their bodies.

Earlier in the day, WRAL's cameras caught the snake crawling out of a siding onto a porch on Sandringham Drive. Its hood was visible when it raised its head to look around.

The search was sparked by a 911 call from the same home early Tuesday.

Joan Nelson expressed relief that the ordeal is over.

I feel a lot safer, said she. I feel extremely happy. After this experience, I feel like I can go outside, walk on the deck, or even go for a jog. Nevertheless, I feel somewhat sorry for the snake.

Even a morning dog walk can prove dangerous for this snake, a zebra cobra that can spit up to nine feet. Approximately 60% of all snakebite deaths occur in Africa. Venom can cause the nervous system to shut down in victims.

An individual hit by the snake's poison would feel immediate pain, swelling, irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea. It would then lead to a high fever and breathing problems, which could cause respiratory failure.

Dr. Salina Locke, a veterinarian with Avian and Exotic Animal Care, treats an array of animals.

Normally, this cobra species does not bite. They spray their venom more often -- they're very accurate, she said.

The snake is not recommended as a pet by Locke due to its risk.

Sleeping people are more likely to be bitten. A bit could cause health issues for years, research shows.

It was Tuesday afternoon when police conducted a search of 6917 Chamonix Place, near the street where the snake was last seen.

There was an animal issue at that home in March. In the afternoon, the zebra cobra was spotted on a porch half a mile away.

There are records in the county that indicate Keith and Rebecca Gifford reside at that address. His Facebook account shows several pictures of snakes he claims are owned by his son, Christopher, according to the account.

Christopher Gifford has more than 460000 followers on TikTok. In one of his posts, he claims to have a 7-foot-long zebra cobra.
