Auschwitz was the very first Nazi German concentration camp founded in the occupied Poland and is also the largest of the camps established by Hitler's regime. It was created because of the overcrowding of prisons that housed Polish citizens detained by the German police. Nearly 10,000 Poles fled the surrounding villages due to the construction. Auschwitz was never meant to be a key Nazi terror center, became the primary point of expulsion for Jews. The camp was a government-controlled institution, financed by the country's budget. In 1944, Auschwitz consisted of three major components: Auschwitz I with 16,000 prisoners, Auschwitz II - Birkenau with the largest gas chambers in Europe and 90,000 prisoners and Auschwitz III - Monowitz with 10,000 prisoners. Numerous smaller camps housed more than 20000 prisoners and served as a labor forces for the main compound.



In the latter half of 1944, Germans began to destroy evidence of their crimes. They burned files destroyed gas chambers and set fire to depots that held the property that was that was left behind. Oswiecim was contacted in January 1945 by troops from the Soviet Red Army. Germans in attempt to transport them to concentration camps inside the Third Reich, organized the Death March of 56,000 prisoners. Nearly 10,000 prisoners died during this trip. In the middle of January , the camp was finally liberated. There were only 7,500 sick and exhausted inmates remained.
