The Auschwitz Birkenau Museum, Krakow's principal attraction, is home to thousands of visitors.
Auschwitz is a trip into the past, when the human experience was devoid of meaning and extermination of Jews and other "worse" nations was the main goal of the German government authorities. Visitors to Auschwitz leave an impression. The gas chambers, watchtowers and death block show the daily life of Jews, Poles.
It is best to do the Auschwitz Tour in autumn or spring, when there aren’t too many tourists. While summer is a popular time to visit Krakow and the concentration camps, it's not recommended for visitors seeking an intimate experience. Auschwitz is extremely crowded during this time of year.
tours to Auschwitz was the very first Nazi German concentration camp founded in occupied Poland and also the largest of all the camps organized by the Nazi regime. The motivation behind its establishment was the increase in the number of prisons for Polish people arrested by the German police. More than 10,000 Poles were forced out of nearby villages during construction. Auschwitz was never designed to be a major Nazi terror centre, was later the main source of expulsions for Jews. The camp was a government-controlled institution, financed by the country's budget. Auschwitz was, in 1944, was comprised of three main parts: Auschwitz I holding 16,000 prisoners, Auschwitz II, Birkenau with 90,000 prisoners with the largest gas chambers in Europe was home to, and Auschwitz III, Monowitz with 10,000 prisoners. Many smaller sub-camps housed over 20000 prisoners and served as a labor to the main compound.
In the latter half of 1944, the Germans started to wipe out the evidence of their crimes by burning documents burning gas chambers and burning depots with property left behind by the victims. In January 1945, the units of the Soviet Red Army approached Oswiecim. Germans set up the Death March for 56,000 prisoners to try and transport prisoners to concentration camps in the Third Reich. Nearly 10,000 people died in this trip. The month of January only 7,500 tired and sick camp inmates were left behind.
