North Raleigh's days-long search for a venomous zebra cobra ends with a glue trap.
As a result of hours of consultation between law enforcement and animal control officers, a venomous zebra cobra was caught with a glue trap on a north Raleigh porch on Wednesday, ending an eventful 48-hour period that attracted attention throughout North Carolina.

It was taken to a safer location to be fully cleaned after it was guided into the bucket and guided out.

WRAL's cameras caught the snake the previous day crawling onto the porch of a house on Sandringham Drive. In looking around, the hood of the vulture was visible.

Camera crews had to be redirected after Animal Control officers confirmed it was a snake before moving in to try to capture it.

This same residence had called 911 early Tuesday, sparking the search.

North Carolina. Following hours of consultation and preparation by Raleigh police and animal control officers, a venomous zebra cobra was caught with a glue trap on a Raleigh porch Wednesday night, bowing out a nearly 48-hour ordeal that gained national attention.

logan snake catcher Cobras were placed inside red buckets and taken to a safe location so the glue could be removed completely from their bodies.

WRAL's cameras caught the snake the previous day crawling onto the porch of a house on Sandringham Drive. When it lifted its head to look around, the top of its hood was visible.

After confirming it was a snake, Animal Control officers moved the camera crews back of the area and attempted to capture it there.

The search was sparked by a 911 call from the same home early Tuesday.

The ordeal is over at last, said neighbor Joan Nelson.

I feel much safer and I am really happy, she said. Now that I can go outside, I can walk on my deck and go outside. Despite this, I feel sorry for the snake.

A striped snake lies out on a porch in a north Raleigh neighborhood where a zebra cobra has disappeared.

A zebra cobra can spit 9 feet long and is faster than most snakes, making morning dog walks extremely hazardous. The African Snakebite Institute cites the snake as extremely dangerous. It is possible that the venom can damage a victim's nervous system.

One who is poisoned by the cobra would immediately feel pain, swelling, irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea. In addition to a heavy fever and breathing problems, respiratory failure could also result.

Dr. Salina Locke, a veterinarian with Avian and Exotic Animal Care, treats an array of animals.

Cobras of this species do not bite. The venom is more likely to spray because they are very accurate and go straight for the eye, she said.

A pet of this snake is not recommended because of the risks, according to Locke.

In most cases, bites occur when people are sleeping. Bite victims could be plagued with health problems for years, studies show.

There was a police search of a home near 6917 Chamonix Place where a cobra was last observed on Tuesday afternoon.

Four police officers visited the home in March to investigate an animal problem. Following the zebra cobra's spotting on a porch a half mile away, they returned on Monday and Tuesday.

The county records show that Keith and Rebecca Gifford live at that address. His Facebook account shows several pictures of snakes he claims are owned by his son, Christopher, according to the account.

Christopher Gifford has over 460000 followers on his TikTok account. He says he has a 7-foot-long zebra cobra on one of his posts.
