North Raleigh's days-long search for a venomous zebra cobra ends with a glue trap.
Following many hours of consultation and preparation by Animal Control officers, a venomous zebra cobra was caught with a glue trap on a north Raleigh porch on Wednesday, ending an eventful 48-hour period that attracted attention throughout North Carolina.

The glue was removed from the cobra's body after being guided into a red bucket and brought to a safe location.

The snake was seen crawling onto a porch of a house on Sandringham Drive earlier in the day. In looking around, the hood of the vulture was visible.

After confirming it was the snake, Animal Control officers moved the camera crews back before moving in to capture it.

911 call from that same house sparked the search at the beginning of Tuesday.

Raleigh is a North Carolina city. Following hours of consultation and preparation by police and animal control officers, a glue trap finally captured a venomous zebra cobra on a north Raleigh porch Wednesday, highlighting the nearly 48-hour ordeal across North Carolina.

After guiding the cobra into a bucket, the glue over its body was carefully removed.

The WRAL cameras captured the striped snake crawling out of the siding of a Sandringham Drive house, onto the front porch. Lifting its head, it was able to see its hood.

Camera crews were moved back after the officers confirmed it was the snake before attempting to catch it.

Early Tuesday, early Tuesday morning, a 911 call from inside the same house sparked the search.

Joan Nelson expressed relief that the ordeal is over.

I feel a lot safer, said she. I feel extremely happy. After this experience, I feel like I can go outside, walk on the deck, or even go for a jog. The snake, though, must have felt bad.

The snake in question was found laying out on a porch in a north Raleigh neighborhood where a zebra cobra had been reported missing.

Even a morning dog walk can prove dangerous for this snake, a zebra cobra that can spit up to nine feet. The African Snakebite Institute states that the snake is very dangerous. It could cause a victim's nervous system to shut down.

Those stung by the poison would experience severe pain, swelling, rashes, nausea, and diarrhea as a result. In the aftermath, a severe fever and breathing problems would ensue, which could eventually lead to respiratory failure.

Salina Locke is an experienced veterinarian at Avian and Exotic Animal Care, where she treats all types of pets.

Cobras of this species do not bite. The venom from them, she said, is typically sprayed. She said they are extremely accurate and shoot straight for the eyes.

Sleeping is when most bites occur. A bit could cause health issues for years, research shows.

Police searched a home on 6917 Chamonix Place on Tuesday, near where the cobra was last seen.

A police officer visited that home four times in March for an animal issue. The zebra cobra was spotted on a porch a half mile away on Monday and Tuesday.

The county records indicate that Keith and Rebecca Gifford live at this address. An account linked to Keith Gifford's name features several photos of snakes belonging to his son, Christopher.

Christopher Gifford has 460000 followers on TikTok. According to one of his posts, he claims to have a 7-foot zebra cobra.
