One glue trap ends days of searching for venomous zebra cobras in north Raleigh.
Following many hours of consultation and preparation by Animal Control officers, law enforcement and animal control officers trapped the venomous snake on a north Raleigh porch Wednesday night, ending an eventful 48-hour period that attracted attention throughout North Carolina.

A red bucket was used to guide the cobra into a safe location where all glue could be removed from its body.

An earlier video interview had captured a striped snake crawling onto a porch on Sandringham Drive from the siding of a house. When it lifted its head to look around, its hood was visible.

After confirming it was the snake, Animal Control officers moved the camera crews back before moving in to capture it.

On Tuesday, police searched the same home after receiving a 911 call there.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Despite hours of preparation by animal control and law enforcement officers, a glue trap finally captured a venomous zebra cobra on a north Raleigh porch Wednesday, capping a 48-hour saga that attracted national attention.

As soon as the cobra was guided into the red bucket, it was moved to a safe location where the glue could be fully removed.

The snake was seen crawling onto a porch of a house on Sandringham Drive earlier in the day. Lifting its head, it was able to see its hood.

After confirming the snake was the one they were trying to capture, Animal Control officers moved the camera crews back.

911 call from that same house sparked the search at the beginning of Tuesday.

The ordeal is over at last, said neighbor Joan Nelson.

My feeling of security has improved, she said. My deck and I have become more comfortable outside now. The snake, however, was in a terrible position.

A striped snake lies out on a porch in a north Raleigh neighborhood where a zebra cobra has disappeared.

Even a morning walk with your dog becomes dangerous due to the snake's ability to spit up to nine feet and be as fast as a zebra cobra. Apparently, African Snakebite Institute believes the snake is very dangerous. A victim's nervous system could shut down if stung with venom.

A person hit by the poison would experience pain, swelling, irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea. It would then lead to a high fever and breathing problems, which could cause respiratory failure.

Salina Locke is an experienced veterinarian at Avian and Exotic Animal Care, where she treats all types of pets.

Cobras of this kind usually do not bite. They spray their venom more often -- they are very accurate and attack straight in the eye, according to her.

A pet of this snake is not recommended because of the risks, according to Locke.

Bite incidents are most common during sleep. Bite victims may suffer health problems for years, research reveals.

In the late afternoon on Tuesday, police searched 6917 Chamonix Place, near the place where the snake was last spotted.

An animal problem led to four police visits in March. The zebra cobra was found about a half mile away on Monday and Tuesday.

The records of the county show Rebecca and Keith Gifford live at the address. There is a Facebook account for Keith Gifford that shows several photos of snakes that he claims are owned by his son, Christopher.
