The History of Sagami, Japan
Sagami Province was an ancient region in the southern half of Japan. It was bordered by the Izu, Suruga, and Musashi provinces. The modern cities of Yokohama and Kawasaki were situated within the region. sagame The Sagami Bay was a key access point to the Pacific Ocean. This is a very popular tourist destination for those who enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

The ancient Japanese language was used to write the sagame waka poem. The poem was later published in Ogura Hyakunin Itshu. It is said that Sagami was an waka poet. However, it is not a religious occurrence. The sagamai poem, however, is the best example of waka poetics. It is regarded as a symbol of purity and love for the eternal.

Kamakura was also home to the Sagame Shogunate. While the Sagami region was contested but it was eventually included in the Kanto region under Tokugawa Ieyasu. Under his leadership, western Sagami province became part of the Odawara domain. Tokugawa Ieyada also governed other regions of the province.

Sagami's location on the Tokaido road made the city a major post-town and made it a thriving one. The location near the ocean made it a major port and security checkpoint. Because it was close to the city, it was able to allow for the development of post towns and the economy. The emergence of the Tokaido road created a major route that connected Edo to Kyoto. The two cities are connected by rail, but Sagami gained popularity due to its central position along the Tokaido.

The Treaty of Kanagawa allowed foreign visitors to Sagami. American Commodore Matthew C. Perry, an American, landed in 1853 with a fleet of black vessels on the southern Miura Peninsula. The landing led to the rapid growth of Yokohama as a treaty port. Yokohama was the first major city in Sagami and also the first port in the area.
