"Penyuluh semakin berkurang karena memasuki usia pensiun. Ada juga yang beralih fungsi sebagai petugas di luar bidang pertanian," ujar Pelaksana Tugas (Plt) Kepada Dinas Pertanian, Tanaman Pangan, dan Hortikultura Sumsel Bambang Pramono.
Bambang mengatakan langkah berikutnya yang ditempuh Pemprov Sumsel adalah mendirikan atau mendorong penangkar produsen benih, untuk bisa menjadi penangkar e-catalog. Penangkar itu nantinya bisa membantu memenuhi kebutuhan Kementerian Pertanian (Kementan) dalam kegiatan bantuan benih di seluruh Indonesia, termasuk Sumsel.
Selain itu Pemprov Sumsel juga mendorong peningkatan jumlah laboratorium pengujian benih yang terakreditasi. Laboratorium itu untuk menguji dan mengambil sampel benih yang masuk ke Sumsel agar kualitas benih sesuai kriteria.
https://sariagri.id/ Menurut Bambang, target menuju swasembada benih didorong masalah keterbatasan benih di sejumlah daerah sentra produksi.
Sumsel memiliki luas tanam hampir 700 ribu hektare dengan kebutuhan benih petani 25 ribu ton.
"Dengan target swasembada ini, diharapkan dapat mempermudah petani dalam memenuhi kebutuhan benih, karena mereka tidak perlu lagi menunggu tender,” katanya.
Pemprov Sumsel menargetkan dapat memproduksi 3,1 juta ton gabah kering giling (GKG) pada 2021 dengan meningkatkan intensitas penanaman dan produktivitas.
Sumsel harus menambah sekitar 400 ribu ton GKG karena produksi tahun 2020 itu tepatnya 2.696.103 ton GKG.
Secara nasional Sumsel masih di bawah Sulawesi Selatan dengan 4,6 juta ton GKG, Jawa Barat 9,0 juta ton GKG, Jawa Tengah 9,6 juta ton GKG dan Jawa Timur 9,9 juta ton GKG.
