What is an Activist?
What is an Activist? An Activist is defined as: "a person who makes his own personal statement of devotion to a cause, idea, or group, with the intent of leading others to act." Sounds simple enough, but what does this mean when we are talking about Teju Adisa-Farrar? magazine will answer that question below.

Activists are comprised of many different types. One would be the institutional investors. These are the guys and girls that we deal with everyday. They fund companies, create pools of money for environmental projects, and invest in companies that focus on social causes. This is where most activists come from.

Activists go beyond making statements and going down to the corner to meet with other people who have the same belief as they do. Some would argue that the tea party movement went way beyond mere advocacy of freedom and liberty. Some would say that the fight against gay marriage goes beyond mere being an advocate for one's beliefs, these same folks would also argue that they go beyond being an activist, because they have taken it to a whole other level.

Activists are people who go beyond advocacy, beyond social media, beyond calling their representatives, beyond writing op-eds, beyond blogging, and becoming experts on whatever issue is of concern to them. This is what is an activist. These are people who can quote Martin Luther King, and they can quote Jefferson at Monticello, and they can give intelligent intellectual speeches about environmental issues or whatever it is that interests them. The difference between a regular activist, and an activist who are more focused on the issue at hand, then what's hot on the news, or what's hot in the society, is that the former are more focused on their philosophy of direct action. Activists are people who put their mind to work; people who dedicate themselves fully to make a difference in the world, and they are constantly working toward changing things. They aren't just sitting around twigs or tweeting like some twitter tweeter.

What is an Activist? One might say that the answer lies in the fact that an Activist is someone who puts their mind to something, whether that is writing pamphlets to pass out to the masses or setting up neighborhood clean-ups in order to bring awareness to issues. However, some people see these same folks twigging or tweeting and thinking, "Well, those are just twiggers, those aren't activists." And yet, that is exactly what the Activist is. Activists aren't twiggers, they aren't tweeting, and they aren't causing chaos where there isn't chaos.

Activism is the art of direct action. It isn't just making calls to Congressmen, or fundraising in door-to-door fashion. That isn't activism. What is an Activist, is anyone who put their mind to doing something to make the change, who uses their creativity to come up with creative campaigns, and who makes sure that all of their actions are geared towards changing not just one thing, but hopefully the whole world.

The difference between a good Activist and a bad one is their creativity. A Twitter-tweeting, Facebook-liking, YouTube-posting, sticker-pushing, tequila-totingactivist isn't doing much more than just tweeting about their latest outrage. magazine 're not using their imagination; they're not thinking; they're not coming up with new campaigns or social media strategies; and they certainly aren't donating their time and talents to help other Activists accomplish something.

What is an Activist is someone who gets out of bed every morning, who gets to their office early to get up early to be well-prepared, and who reads books, researches issues, and talks to as many people as possible. They're someone who puts in the time to get facts straight, and to figure out creative ways to put those facts into productive action. They're someone who know that shareholder activism, campaign funding, and open letters to corporations won't solve the problems of the world, but they will make the problems seem bigger and will make the activists look good in the eyes of the media. And in the end, it's the shareholders who will lose, because they bought into the hype created by the media.
