What The Experts Aren't Saying About Standard Iso 45001 And How It Affects You
ISO 45001:2018 specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, and gives guidance for its use, to enable organizations to provide safe and healthy workplaces by preventing work-related injury and ill health, as well as by proactively improving its OH&S performance.

Any organization who wishes to implement, maintain, and improve their OH&S system can use ISO 45001:2018.


ISO 45001:2018 helps an organization to achieve the intended outcomes of its OH&S management system. Consistent with the organization's OH&S policy, the intended outcomes of an OH&S management system include:


a) Continuous improvement in OH&S performance

b) Fulfillment of legal requirements and other obligations;

c) Achievement of OH&S goals.

ISO 45001:2018 applies to all organizations, regardless of their size, type or activities. It covers all OH&S risks that are under an organization's control. This includes factors such as the environment in which it operates, and the expectations and needs of its employees.

ISO 45001:2018 doesn't specify any criteria for OH&S performance nor does it prescribe the design of an OH&S management program.

ISO 45001:2018 enables an organization, through its OH&S management system, to integrate other aspects of health and safety, such as worker wellness/wellbeing.


ISO 45001:2018 does not address issues such as product safety, property damage or environmental impacts, beyond the risks to workers and other relevant interested parties.

ISO 45001:2018 may be used in its entirety or in part to improve occupational safety and health management. All claims of conformity with this document cannot be accepted unless they are fully integrated into the organization's OH&S management systems and are met without exception.


For organizations that are serious about improving employee safety, reducing workplace risks and creating better, safer working conditions, there's ISO 45001.

The International Labour Organization estimates that more than 7600 people are killed each day by work-related diseases or accidents. An ISO committee of occupational safety and health experts began work on an International Standard that could save nearly three million lives every year. The approach is similar to ISO 14001 and ISO 9001. ISO 45001 is a continuation of the international standards that have been successful in this area, such as OHSAS18001, the International Labour Organization ILO OSH Guidelines, and various national standards.

These guidelines were created by the ILO to be a practical tool to assist organizations and institutions in order for them to achieve continuous improvement in their occupational safety and/or health (OSH). These guidelines were developed in accordance with internationally accepted principles as defined by the ILO's three-partite constituencies.
