Here's a story about my most recent trip to the Arctic on a boat. It sounded great, National Geographic trip thru the ice and back, with polar bears and numerous other animals. It was likely to be snow everywhere, ice everywhere. Man-made machines were going to fight the elements and move thru the frozen northern wasteland. It sounded like an epic undertaking, an epic combat with the north weather, the north pole.

I was instructed to bring as much technology as I could fit in my suitcases. To extend my working space I brought my laptop. The staff assured me that the electricity was not a problem. I wasn't sure what was in store for me. I had no idea that two days into the 14-day trip , I'd lose my Internet connection, and then disappear from the face of the Earth for the remaining 10 days. It was a shock to me when it occurred. Any trip, no matter how far or difficult is going to cause me to disconnect from the internet. There was not only unfinished business I had to address in the week that followed, but I also did not prepare for the time off.

It doesn't matter if are forced to go offline. Internet is everywhere. In the event that your home connection has temporary problems, you can always find a nearby McDonalds and make use of their complimentary WiFi connection to complete whatever you need. This is it. Four songs for two weeks of Insanity. If I had known this was likely to be the situation, I would be prepared. I would have loaded my laptop with television shows, films and music videos. I could have spent hours listening to my favourite podcasts. It's easy to download them, convert them to MP3 and save them to my personal computer. I can then lie in my bedroom listening to the podcasts that I love, but seldom find the time to listen. It would be my gold hour, or two weeks' worth of gold. It ended up being two weeks of looking at the ceiling and trying to catch passengers every time there was a noise from the corridors.


Both metaphorically and literally In both ways, the trip was empty. Never have I ever been so bored. I was sure that the issue will eventually be due to the thick ice, and so the boat was forced to turn around and then be redirected back to civilization. Although this was not surprising this meant that a lot of hours could be spent listening to and watching DIY videos, podcasts about home fixes or simply enjoying music. The next time, I'll convert Youtube videos from mp4 format to MP3 format using my laptop. Bring them along and you can listen to your favorite music right on your laptop. Music can lift spirits, so don't be discouraged. Also remember Hulu and Netflix apps are able to download shows and movies to stream offline, those can also be brought to the long journey across the arctic. Be sure to stay away on boredom.
