n annual international symposium about olive oil and health held by Yale School of Public Health. Yale School of Public Health will be heading to the middle of the world of olive oil - Spain - where leading experts will be gathered this year to discuss the impact and potential of what is sometimes referred to as "liquid gold."
Co-hosted by the University of Jaen, the symposium is scheduled to run between December 9 and 12 in Jaen the city of the province of Andalusia, the heart of the Spanish olive oil region, and an area that is being considered as a UNESCO World Heritage site for an olive grove, known as the Mar de Olivos, or "Sea of Olives." This is the third symposium that has been held in 2018. The last time the event was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Organised by Vasilis Vasiliou, Ph.D., the Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Epidemiology and chair of Yale School of Public Health's Department of Environmental Health Sciences, along with Tassos C. Kyriakides, Ph.D., a Yale Center for Analytical Sciences (biostatistics) faculty participant, the symposium will bring experts from academia, business leaders, farmers and regional and national policymakers to discuss the still-untapped potential of the olive tree and its fruits including olive oil.
"We're extremely excited to be returning. This year's festival is the biggest yet, with an impressive and challenging program. I am incredibly excited about bringing the people together who are as obsessed with olive oil like I am." declared Vasiliou. "There's nothing like this gathering anywhere else in the world."
The symposium this year will focus on various issues related to the cultivation of olives as well as what the next steps for olive oil, both in terms of human and global health. The topics include:
