The outcome of the present endeavour suggests the different breeding strategy for crosswise as well as location wise because gene action was different in two locations i.e Palampur and Kangra and three crosses viz., TL-11 x Him Alsi-2,Turkey x Binwa and TL-43 x Binwa. Abstract: ABSTRACT newlineThe present investigation entitled, Biochemical evaluation of tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum Gaertn.) genotypes was carried out in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, College of Basic Sciences, CSK Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur during 2008-2010. The grain samples of thirteen tartary buckwheat varieties / genotypes were collected from Mountain Agriculture Research and Extension Centre (MAREC), Sangla of the University during 2008-2010 and samples of fresh leaves were harvested during the year 2009-2010. Mean values of moisture, fat, ash, crude fibre, carbohydrates, total soluble protein, methionine, tryptophan, in vitro protein digestibility, magnesium, calcium and zinc evaluated in the grains of tartary buckwheat genotypes during the three years of experimentation showed the range of variation from 10.3 - 11.5%, 1.9 - 2.5%, 1.8 - 2.3%, 7.1 - 7.9%, 63.8 - 67.4%, 9.8 - 11.3 %, 76.0 - 93.5 mg/g N, 68.2 - 78.0 mg/g N, 70.7-74.7 %, 194.5-216.5 mg/100g, 49.2-57.6 mg/100g and 2.6-3.2 mg/100g, respectively.
Abstract: newline ABSTRACT newlineThe choice of an efficient breeding methodology depends to a large extent on the knowledge of the genetic systems controlling the character to be selected .The objectives of this study were to determine nature of gene action for seed yield, fibre and quality traits,to study the inheritance of diseases and to identify markers linked to the disease(s) in flax. Duplicate type of gene action was observed in the expression of days to 50 per cent flowering ,seed yield/plant, plant height, technical height and fibre traits at Kangra location for TL-11 x Him Alsi-2, these observation implies the use of biparental approach and selection to be delayed to later generation. A monogenic type of gene action was recorded for the resistance to linseed rust (Melampsora lini) and wilt (Fusarium oxysporium).High fatty acid was found in all the three cross combinations. Complimentary type of gene action was seen for biological yield/plant, seed yield/plant for TL-11 x Him Alsi-2 at Palampur location and implies the use of biparental approach and early generation selection to be followed.

Transplanting of turmeric seedling as a substitute for rhizome sowing will conserve 75 % of seed rhizome along with conserving farm resources viz., irrigation water and labour resulting in higher net returns. Question 4. Is it important to increase the area under irrigation ? Poor growth and yield attributes observed in IISR Alleppey Supreme and IISR Prathibha was due to sub optimal temperature prevailed in the experimental area. Thus significantly superior growth attributes viz., plant height (50.2 cm); LAI (6.43) and number of leaves/plant (9.0) were recorded in Palam Lalima. Owing to better growth attributes higher rhizome yield /plant (236.78 g) mother, primary and secondary rhizome weight had assisted Palam Lalima to attain higher rhizome yield. Palam Lalima being a locally acclimatized cultivar had earliness in germination which facilitated for adequate time to complete various crop phenophases. Palam Lalima and Suvarna performed best when they were planted during first fortnight of April as compared to first fortnight of May. Higher net returns (Rs 3,39,393/ha) and B C ratio (3.09) was observed in Palam Lalima.

The response of different integrated nutrient management treatments in sprouting broccoli variety Palam Samridhi revealed significant variation with respect to various parameters studied. It is because modern farming methods use a high-yielding variety of seeds. There was a significant increase in organic carbon, CEC and available phosphorus content, respectively, through integrated use of organics and inorganics for the last twenty years over its initial value while available N and K declined over the years in all the treatments. All the fractions of sulphur were highly correlated with organic carbon and CEC. Zero fertilization led to decline in the levels of all the forms of sulphur at both the depths as compared to the buffer plots while, application of sulphur containing fertilizers and organics increased all the sulphur fractions in soil compared to control. Zn-I (non-specifically adsorbed exchangeable Zn) and Cu-I (soil solution and exchangeable Cu) were the most important fractions of zinc and copper contributing towards DTPA-Zn and Cu, respectively.
