A biocide is defined by the European laws as an act of killing or extermination deliberately created as a method of reducing an infected or dangerous organism to reduce the numbers of the micro-organisms. The term 'biocide' was first used in 1988 by the ICRC and was introduced to the world by the World Health Assembly. This wording was adopted after the catastrophic biological warfare attacks on the former Yugoslavia. It was imposed by the nations that sponsored these attacks. There are five types of biocide: chemical, biological, bacteriological, toxic and vermicidal.

The most common type of biocide is chemical biocides. They can be used against viruses, fungi, algae, cockroaches, fleas and other microorganisms. These active ingredients are added to water or other liquid and can then be spread on infected surfaces. The surfaces to be infected must be completely clean and dry before application. Some biocides have strong disinfecting properties, while others merely inhibit the growth or reproduction of the microorganisms.

Biological biocides are most commonly used against infectious organisms. They can also be used against single celled species such as bacteria. Some examples of these include: biological agents against bioterrorism, swine flu and anthrax. In the health care settings, these can also be used against: food, livestock and animal virus; exposure of patients to hazardous substances; exposure of patients to contaminated blood and body fluids; and transfer of contaminated biological agents. These biocides often affect the structures or cells of humans and animals and may cause death.

Biocides used against bacteria can affect humans and animals through direct contact or indirectly. For example, a spill taking place in a water treatment plant may contaminate the soil and contaminate the groundwater. In this situation, the contaminated soils will then end up in the drinking water supply. As a result, people who use or consume water will potentially become ill. However, biocides used against bacteria are usually safe for people, even children.

In Europe, risk assessment for biocides is carried out by national occupational health and safety management organizations. In the United States, this function is performed by state occupational healthcare agencies. A variety of national occupational healthcare organizations are now establishing guidelines on the use of biocides and the corresponding risks. However, no regulatory framework has been developed that would govern the use of these chemicals in the environment. Therefore, the use of biocides is largely dependent on the judgment of each individual health care agency.

Risk assessment of biocides requires certain criteria to be fulfilled. For example, the risk assessment needs to take into account whether or not the chemical will affect humans as well as animals. The chemical must also have few negative effects on the environment during its use or application. Another important criterion is the probability of the substance causing adverse effects on humans. Lastly, the risk assessment should consider the likelihood of adverse effects on the environment during future use and application.

Preservatives are widely used in the manufacture of many common products. For example, parabens are widely used in cosmetic products such as hairspray, body lotion and shaving cream. These substances are widely suspected of having a role in various health complications including depression, breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease. Although there is no definitive proof on the links between preservatives and these diseases, biocides and similar substances are banned in several countries due to their suspected links with these diseases. water cooling biocide is another name for an insecticide and is commonly used as a topical or systemic insecticide that prevents mosquitoes from biting us.

Chlorine is widely used as disinfectant. It is commonly used in public drinking water systems as it is an inexpensive alternative to chlorine. However, drinking water containing a high level of chlorine has been linked to a number of health problems including bladder cancer, respiratory tract infection and bladder dysfunction. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has set standards for levels of chlorine in drinking water, however, these standards are often not met because of the lack of regulations pertaining to how often and how much chlorine companies add to our publicly treated supplies.
