These biocides often affect the structures or cells of humans and animals and may cause death.</p>

<p>Biocides used against bacteria can affect humans and animals through direct contact or indirectly. For example, a spill taking place in a water treatment plant may contaminate the soil and contaminate the groundwater. In this situation, the contaminated soils will then end up in the drinking water supply. As a result, people who use or consume water will potentially become ill. However, biocides used against bacteria are usually safe for people, even children.</p>

For example, the risk assessment needs to take into account whether or not the chemical will affect humans as well as animals. The chemical must also have few negative effects on the environment during its use or application. Another important criterion is the probability of the substance causing adverse effects on humans. Lastly, the risk assessment should consider the likelihood of adverse effects on the environment during future use and application.</p>
