The most frequent and effective assisted reproductive technology to help women become pregnant is in vitro fertilization or IVF.
After ovulation, after a mature egg has been released from the ovaries, a male sperm penetrates a woman's egg and fertilizes it inside her body in a normal pregnancy. It can be different ivf success rates by age.
The fertilized egg subsequently connects to the uterus's (womb's) wall and develops into a baby. Natural conception is the term for this.
Fertility therapy is a possibility if spontaneous or unaided conception is not possible.
Since the late 1970s, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has been employed. Louise Brown, the first "test-tube baby," was born on July 25, 1978. The procedure's co-inventors, Robert Edwards and Patrick Steptoe are regarded as IVF's forefathers.
Depending on the clinic, different techniques may be used. However, IVF entails the following steps typically:
1. Interfering with the menstrual cycle
The lady is given medicine to suppress her natural menstrual cycle, usually in a daily injection for around two weeks.
2 ovulation superovulation
The woman is given reproductive medicines that contain the fertility hormone follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). FSH causes the ovaries to generate more eggs than they usually would. Ultrasound imaging of the ovaries can be used to track their progress.
3. Getting the eggs back
Follicular aspiration, a minor surgical operation, is used to collect the eggs. A skinny needle is introduced into an ovary through the vaginal canal. The hand has a suction device attached to it. The eggs are sucked out as a result of this. Each ovary goes through the same procedure.
According to research published in 2011, extracting 15 eggs from the ovaries in one cycle increases the chances of a healthy pregnancy. You can also use donated or frozen eggs.
4. Fertilization and insemination
The harvested eggs are mixed with male sperm and maintained in a climate-controlled chamber. The sperm should penetrate the egg after a few hours. The sperm is sometimes put straight into the egg. An intracytoplasmic sperm injection is what this is called (ICSI).
Frozen sperm obtained via testicular biopsy could be used. This is thought to be just as effective as using fresh sperm in conceiving a child. The fertilized egg divides into two and develops into an embryo. Some institutes now offer preimplantation genetic diagnostic (PGD), which can check a source for congenital abnormalities before it is implanted. This is a contentious term that isn't always utilized. For transfer, one or two of the best embryos are chosen. Progesterone or human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is then administered to the woman to help the uterine lining receive the embryo.
5. Embryo transplantation
More than one embryo is sometimes implanted in the womb. The doctor and the couple must want to have a family talk about how many sources they should transfer. Typically, a doctor will only transfer many embryos if there are no suitable embryos available.
A tiny tube, or catheter, is used to transfer the embryo. It enters the womb via the vaginal canal. Healthy embryo growth can begin once the origin adheres to the uterine lining.
