What is an Activist Shareholder?

In order to understand the concept of what is an activist investor, it is important to understand the concept of activism and corporate governance in general. Activist investors are corporations, groups or individuals who put their own personal stake into a business/venture by putting their own personal financial resources behind it, or by working on their own behalf to make certain that a business/venture goes ahead. The main difference between this type of investor and a regular investor is that they have a higher level of risk, as their involvement could see them losing their money very quickly - although this could be mitigated if they have a good understanding of what they are doing.


Activists are very different from institutional investors, as they are only permitted to invest a set percentage of the company's capital, in shares or other forms of ownership. This means that they are considered to be lower risk than institutional investors (because they are not entitled to the same dividends as they are). However, institutional investors are usually highly educated and experienced in their own field, which makes their investment decisions more reliable. The main advantage of being invested by an activist shareholder is that they have a voice at meetings and therefore can influence the management of the business. This gives them an influence similar to that of a board of directors, though without needing to vote or be part of the management team. Regardless of whether Twitter shareholder activists are actually effective or not, there is little doubt that these tactics are becoming more common among the crowd as companies try to find ways to remain competitive in an increasingly tight market.
