double date

at first, karl couldn’t tell if you wanted to
be Nick or be with nick. or both. even though, he was fine with either.

it begins to unfold when clay and george begin to date halfway through junior year. george is karls best friend, and clay is nicks best friend. it was so cute for the other two boys to watch clay and george unfold from rarely knowing each other, to be crowned “cutest couple” at the senior prom. nick and karl silently wish to themselves how, hopefully, they can find someone like that for themselves and how
much they envy the twos relationship.

nick and karl knew each other, of course, they were the two wing man for the other boys. they got close once clay and george began to hang out by themselves. they never even realize how fond they have grown for each other, even over the short period of time. they both were caught suddenly staring at each other and mindlessly flirting. it had become routine for the four boys to start going to the café near nicks house every friday evening just to catch up about random things throughout the week. recently, clay and george began to call it a double date.

“what is that even supposed mean ?”
nick asked after the third or fourth time.
“you guys are so oblivious” george said, rolling his eyes.
“elaborate you nimrod” karl said, mocking george’s eye roll.
“you two obviously like each other and are just too dumb to figure it out yourselves” clay chimed in.

nick and karl both turned a light shade of pink, looking over at each other and shrugging. maybe they were both oblivious, maybe they did like each other, but maybe they haven’t realize it yet. but even then, they didn’t mind it that much.

however, karl knows which george is doing, trying to set the two up together. george knows of karls fondness for the boy, after a late night call when the two boys spill out emotions and thoughts for hours upon hours. george swore to never bring it up though, so maybe he knows something that karl doesn’t. either way, karl and nick are such a close friends, that it doesn’t matter if the to stay friends or date; or whatever else may happen. as long as they stay in touch in the end it’s all right with the boys. but maybe, just maybe, there could be a window of opportunity to compromise. where they could get both. but maybe another time, because maybe they aren’t ready. but when they are, everything will fall into place.

they start to realize the other boys feeling slowly increase after a couple of instances; after the cafe.

“whats this for?” nick asked one morning after karl brought him some of his favorite coffee.
“i was buying myself a monster, and saw it and remembered that it was your favorite. so I picked it up on my way out”

Nick couldn’t even remember how long ago he had told Karl what his favorite coffee flavor was, that’s how long it must’ve been. this impressed nick a lot and made him very happy. when people remember things said from a while ago, it usually means they enjoy the conversation. karl enjoyed his and nicks conversation; but maybe it was even small talk. thats how long ago it was. and in the end, it caused nick to have butterflies for the rest of the day, after the encounter, karl was all he could think about. that’s when he realized, he had feelings for karl.

this similar thing happened a couple more times before clay and george seem to catch on. then one night, nick got bold and decided to take clays advice. to send a late night text message that, didn’t change too much, but was a big risk to him.

“so i know it’s late at night and everything, but would you be up to go to the park tomorrow. but like as a date? if not that’s fine, just wondering :)”

he realizes after sending it that he probably should have given it a bit more thought before sending, but it doesn’t matter anymore. what’s been sent cannot be unsent, therefore whatever happens, happens. no matter what karl says, he knows they’ll stay friends in the end.

he hopes for the best of course, but he listens to music and thinks of every possible outcome that could happen, until drifting off to sleep. but to his surprise, he wakes up to a text back.

“that actually sounds perfect! what time are you thinking :D”

nicks heart feels light and heavy at the same time, his stomachs walls are getting tight due to the amount of butterflies he is reviving. he remembers he needs to text karl back, then does quickly.

“i can pick you up at 1 , does that sound okay to you?”

karl types back extremely fast,

“sounds perfect, i’m super exited <3”

nick feels lightheaded, but in the best way possible. he lays down on this bed and calls clay

“hey man, whats up?”
clay asks, answering almost immediately
“dude, i have amazing news”
nick responds
“karl’s calling george, let me just go into the bathroom real quick”
“well, speaking of karl, we’re going on a date to the park at 1, i’m going to bring food for a picnic”
“what! that’s great, do you know what you are going to wear?”
“well, i was hoping you could help me with that”
he can practically hear him thinking before clay responds
“well, something basic, but not to comfortable. your black ripped jeans and a red tshirt?”
“okay, gotchua. i’ll keep you updated, thank you”
“of course man, i’ll talk to you later. love you”
“talk to you later, love you and bye”
“byeeee”

and with that, clay hung up and nick grabbed his clothes to try them on, just to see how they’d look. content with the outfit, he checked the time. the clock read 12pm, meaning he had 45 minutes until he had to leave. he hopped down his stairs and grabbed a basket and a blanket. he filled the basket up with various fruit and then walked to the gas station at the end of his road to grab two monsters. the white ones, (ultra i believe). it was karl’s favorite drink, so there was no way nick would forget it; therefore he got two. one for nick to try, and one for karl to sip on, while eating strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and every other basic picnic snacks you could think of.

the two boys stayed out late into the night, talking about their lives and anything else to come up into the conversation. the only reason they went there separate ways, was because of the intolerable mosquitoes. and fortunately, this became a weekly thing; taking only took 4 or 5 times before the two boys also became official. clay and george were so proud of their best friends, and every friday, the cafe became, officially, a double date.
