In this assignment, I will ask you to write at least two hundred words in which you give your "personal definition of literary fiction."

Your personal definition of literary fiction is a reflection of what you personally liked and might want to emulate about the genre of literary fiction (which is to say, about the short stories we have read in this class). In other words, one way to complete this assignment would simply be to answer the questions, "What did I like about all of the short stories I have read for this class? And what would I like to emulate in the fiction I write in this course?"

In order to complete this assignment, please return to your reading journals and observe what you liked. Then, decide what you might like to emulate in the fiction that you will write for this course. A good strategy would be to abstract some principles from the journals themselves. For example, if you liked the way style of the "The Caretaker," you might write something like, "I liked really liked simple, straightforward style of 'The Caretaker,' so I might want to write a story with a similar non-chalant style."



In terms of my own definition, I would say literary fiction is a wide of array of fiction genres that encompass eachother, whether this be through realistic fiction, romance, or thrillers.
