A Case for Working Class Unions

We've discovered in recent years the oft used terms wealth inequality and its own subset earnings or wage inequality. A good instance of this type of data had been released by the Urban Institute showing the way in 1963 families at the peak of the wealth distribution had six times the abundance of households in the center, whereas by 2016 the wealthy families had twelve times the prosperity of these in the center.

It's hard to ignore the way the decline of labor unions correlates rather neatly with the rise in wealth inequality. Many believe it is not only significance we're seeing, but causation. The reduction of a collective voice from the working class due to the long-standing chorus of anti-unionism has contributed to not only their diminished political sway, but also into a fall in their living standards. Perhaps the income disparity argument is currently poised to go beyond only a claim backed by longitudinal data and charts to one of basic fairness for workers who are crucial, especially during a national emergency.


Now can be a time to discuss structural reforms that benefit the working class. The overarching goal must be to reorient the financial system such that everybody, no matter where they live on the wealth spectrum, can live healthy and safe lives while contributing to the frequent welfare of the nation. This may mean examining and improving macro norms regulating compensation, healthcare, the environment, security regulations, family-friendly working hours, immigration, workplace grievances, and race relations. Increasing anchor of low-income stakeholders do not need to be regarded as a zero-sum redistribution only for the sake of rebalancing a ledger, but by imitating and reinvigorating a united voice to working people overall prosperity is improved and democracy is reinforced. People on the lower and middle rungs of the market spend money too. And lots of it.


Working in concert to fortify 1 's economic interests is widespread among the 'Haves'. Chambers of Commerce, business associations, and federal trade associations fill this demand for company owners and management. It's unlikely we will snap back to the same precise market we had before the pandemic. Ultimately we may look back on a number of social changes that the virus will probably have jolted us into. Hopefully, click of these alterations will be a reckoning for how the working class portion of essential employees is to be medicated and prioritized. A resurgence of unions for these employees is justified and past due.
