(CNN ) - US President Barack Obama confirmed Sunday that Peter Kassig , also known as Abdul - Rahman Kassig , was beheaded by ISIS . Kassig " was snatched from us in an act of pure malice by a terrorist group that the world associated with inhumanity ," he said in a statement.
Obama 's message came hours after the terrorist group posted a video online showing the aftermath of a beheading , but where the victim is not clearly recognizable.
Kassig , 26 , who converted to Islam in captivity , was also known by the name Abdul - Rahman Kassig .
He went to the Middle East as an American soldier and returned as a medical worker , feeling called to help victims of war.
He worked as an aid worker in Syria , where he was captured . He was kidnapped for over a year.

The White House issued a statement condemned the alleged murder and said that intelligence officials are working to determine the authenticity of the video.
" If confirmed , we are appalled by the brutal murder of an American humanitarian aid worker and we express our deepest condolences to his family and friends," said Bernadette Meehan, spokesman for the National Security Council.
British Prime Minister David Cameron also condemned the alleged murder by ISIS .
"I am appalled at the cold-blooded murder of Abdul - Rahman Kassig . ISIL again showing their depravity . My condolences to the family, said in Twitter .
ISIL is another term for ISIS , the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria , which simply calls itself the Islamic State .
