Top 5 Ways to Avoid Koi Stress

Stress is an important topic in Koi-keeping because left unchecked over a prolonged stretch of time, stress will seriously weaken Koi's disease fighting capability thus causing them to be more susceptible to disease and perhaps eventual death. Here are 5 ways to avoid stressing Koi fish:-

Never expose Koi to sudden adjustments to water temperature

Koi can tolerate many temperatures but a sudden change is going to be too stressful for the children. When introducing new Koi to your pond or transferring them from one pond to another, always acclimatise the fish to the new water prior to releasing them.

Protect Koi from would-be predators

The mere sight of your heron or any predator is stressful to Koi. You can do a great deal to protect Koi from being eaten by predators - everything from carefully designing your pond for optimum Koi safety to installing motion-activated sprinklers, electric fence, netting from the pond and so forth. Netting is the most effective method albeit probably the least attractive.

Do not overstock your pond

It is stressful for Koi fish to reside in an overcrowded environment for many reasons. For a start, water quality fails. The more fish which can be within a pond, the more waste technique is produced. Unless pond filters are big enough to deal with the surplus waste, ammonia and nitrite levels will rise which is going to be harmful to the Koi. Also, koi food means regularly competing for food at meal times leading to competitive stress.

Solutions include using a partial water alteration of order to dilute the build-up of ammonia or nitrite level, reducing feed, selling some from the Koi to reduce numbers or constructing a bigger pond!

Maintain water quality

This is absolutely essential in koi-keeping in order to maintain Koi healthy and stress-free. Buy water testing kits and regularly confirm the ammonia level, nitrite level and pH level with the water. The ideal pH for Koi is 7.5 even though they will tolerate a stable pH level of 6.8 to 8.2. It is very dangerous to Koi if pH varies by over 0.5 in a round the clock period as it could affect their bodily functions bringing about stress.Y

You should also regularly check that the river is very oxygenated and chlorine levels are incredibly low.

Always put at least 2 Koi fish together in the pond or tank

Koi fish are sociable creatures. They do not like being on their own. Therefore, constantly be sure there is certainly greater than one fish in the container. In a hospital tank as an example where sick Koi are treated, regardless of whether it is just one fish that's ill you must still put another Koi inside tank with it for company. It is belief that this will aid the sick Koi to recoup by alleviating some with the stress connected with sickness and achieving treatment.

Happy Koi-keeping!
