The purpose of this lab is to look at both elements iodine and zinc and focus on the reactions created to make zinc iodide. With looking at the reaction we will be using the mass ratio between both the elements itself and its compound so we may balance the chemical reaction to its simplest form. When we do this we will indentify the mass and see how it is conserved the the chemical reaction. When working with this lab we will see what happens when zinc and iodine react. When the reaction takes place we will identify any color change, release of gas, and formations that take place. We also will learn how to identify how much mass of each element will need to react with each other. Stoichiometry is what we use when measuring chemicals. Balancing the chemical equation and seeing how much mass it will take an element to react with another is all part of stoichiometry. So with using zinc and iodine we are able to identify how much of each element will be needed to produce zinc iodide.

- ZINC, IODINE, METHANOL, ZINC IODIDE

-250 ml beaker, Erlenmeyer flask,

Procedure:

We are going to us a 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask.

We are to weigh the flask and record the weight of the flask and then weigh the flask with zinc.

Add the iodine crystals into the flask and weigh it as well

Get 20 mL of Methanol and while under the hood add it to the Erlenmeyer flask

When reaction is complete it will form a pale yellow

Weigh a 250 mL beaker that will contain the zinc iodide solution

Add 5 mL of methanol into the erlenmeyer flask and move it around the flask then pour into beaker (repeat twice)
