I can still hear Mom and Dad’s words in my head, old lines about “always being prepared” and “doing what needed to be done”. And however much I might have hated hearing them over and over, they were right.
Dad told us that the bomb shelter would keep us safe and fed for 20 years, and I believed him. I think he cleared out all the grocery stores in the town in order to fill it.
When the bombs fell, I was so grateful for everything they’d done for us. The shelter kept us safe and relatively comfortable, and the shelves kept us full, and the boxes of bullets made me feel safe.
There were books and games and everything for me down there, but I guess Mom and Dad got kinda bored, and they started snacking. I knew my Dad could eat a lot of food, but I’ve never seen someone go through food like that.
They said the food would last 20 years, but I’m only 12. At this rate, it won’t last long enough for me. I won’t let myself starve, I just won’t.
I’m prepared, and I know it has to be done. I can spare the two bullets.
