Before the execution order, Halide Edip moved to Ankara with her husband and joined Turkish War of Independence. She left her children in İstanbul. On 19 March 1920 she arrived to the Gevye with Adnan Bey on horseback and traveled to Ankara via train with Yunus Nadi Bey on 2 April.
Halide Edib served at Keçiören Quarters in Ankara. She and Yunus Nadi Bey agreed on form Anadolu Agency. When the Mustafa Kemal approved she started working for agency. She was the reporter, writer and head of it. She transfered the information about the war with telegraph. She followed the Europe press and communicated with them. She was the translator of Mustafa Kemal. Halide Edip helped Yunus Nadi with Hakimiyet-i Milliye newspaper and took care of Mustafa Kemal's editorial works.
She became the president of Ankara Kızılay and served as a nurse at Eskişehir. Mustafa Kemal assigned her to the front headquarters. During the Sakarya War she became a corporal. She investigated the harm of people caused by Greeks. She wrote books about the Kurtuluş Savaşı with a different perspective. Türk'ün Ateşle İmtihanı (1922) Ateşten Gömlek (1922), Kalp Ağrısı (1924), Zeyno'nun Oğlu are some of them.
