İlk CIA ekibinin Irak'a giriş tarihi 10 Temmuz 2002'dir. Bu ekip CIA'nın özel eylem bölüğü üyelerinden oluşuyordu. Bunlar işgal için çeşitli hazırlıklara başladılar.
Daha önemlisi, Kürt Peşmergeleri örgütleyerek işgalin kuzey cephesini oluşturdular. Bununla birlikte kuzeyde bulunan El-Kaide bağlantılı Ensar el-İslam örgütü ve Irak ordusunu bölgeden çıkarttılar.
20 Mart’ta Irak'a askeri işgal başladı. 2003 Irak işgalini, ABD ordu komutanı General Tommy Franks, "Irak Özgürleştirme Operasyonu" kod ismiyle duyurdu. Koalisyon güçleri kuzeyde Kürtler'i yanına alarak işgale başladı ve yaklaşık kırk ülke işgale destek verdi.
Çevreye zararlar
Körfez savaşında Kuveyt’te yakılan petrol kuyuları 600 milyon ton petrolü tüketerek havada is, gazlar ve tehlikeli kimyasallardan oluşan bir battaniye meydana getirmiştir.
Çıkan duman güneşten gelen ışınları engellemiş; bölge ülkelerinde ısı yaklaşık 10°C düşmüştür.
Petrol dumanı içindeki CO² bölge ülkelerinde sera etkisi ve asit yağmurlarına neden olmuştur.
Bugün Bağdat’ta yaşayanların büyük bir çoğunluğu Dicle’nin kirli sularını içiyor. Kanalizasyon atıkları; arıtma tesisleri tahrip olduğu için kontrolsüz şekilde Dicle’ye akıyor.
Dicle sularının içme suyu olarak kullanıldığı bölgelerde sinir sistemi hastalıkları, doğum anomalileri ve kanserlerin görülme sıklığı arttığı Irak’lı uzmanlar tarafından belirtiliyor.
