*Gen: Kromozom lokuslarında dizilen en küçük kalıtsal bilgi birikimine verilen addır.
*Alel gen: Bir karakterin kalıtımından sorumlu gen çeşitlerinin her biridir. Örneğin insanların kan grubunu belirleyen 3 tane alel gen bulunur. Bunlar A,B ve 0 alel genleridir.
*Genotip: Bir canlının sahip olduğu genlerin toplamıdır.
*Fenotip: Genotip ve çevresel faktörlerin etkisiyle ortaya çıkan dış görünüştür.
*Baskın gen (dominant): Heterozigot durumda fenotipte etkisini gösterebilen gendir (A,B gibi). Genotipte genellikle büyük harflerle belirtilir.
*Çekinik gen (resesif): Heterozigot durumda fenotipte etkisini gösteremeyen gendir (a,b gibi). Genotipte genellikle küçük harflerle belirtilir.
*Homozigot (arı döl=saf ırk): Alel genlerin her ikisinin de aynı özellikte (baskın, çekinik gibi) olmasıdır (AA, aa gibi).
*Heterozigot (melez=hibrit): Alel genlerin birbirinden farklı olmasıdır (Aa, XY gibi).
*Heterosis (melez gücü): Genetik olarak melezlendirme yöntemleriyle üretilen yeni bireylerin, herhangi bir özelliği yönünden, ebeveyn türlerinin ortalamasından daha iyi olması durumudur. Örneğin yaprak sayısı ortalama 30 olan bir çeşitle yaprak sayısı 50 olan bir çeşidin melezinin yaprak sayısının 40’ı geçmesi heterosisdir.
